Chateau Lambousa is pleased to announce that the BRS are organizing a blood drive for the TRNC Central Blood Bank at the Lambousa Market on Saturday 23rd October. As you are all well aware the blood and plasma requirements of the TRNC are a matter of continual urgency and we strongly encourage all those that are able to donate a unit of blood for the benefit of our entire community. Facilities for collection will be inside and under-cover on the day and refreshments have been organised for donors. Collection will start from 10:00am and carry on until the early afternoon.

The BRS runs blood donor days annually: 3 times at Girne Hospital, 2 times at Iskele Medical Centre, and 2 times at Yeni Erenkoy. There is also this additional one at Chateau Lambousa in Lapta on Saturday the 23rd October. You can also donate blood at any time throughout the year on weekdays between 08:00 and 14:30 at the Central Blood Bank at the State Hospital in Lefkosa. You may give blood every 3 months and should be between 18 and 65 years old. NB If you take aspirin you should stop for 72 hours prior to collection should you wish to donate.

Hi, If we donate blood once do we have to give continuously? If so, how many times a year? Cheers, D.

As a regular and emergency blood donor into the TRNC system, why do I still have to have my blood tested at each residency application and then have to pay for this dubious 'privilege'? What are they testing for? What are they then injecting into my arm? Why?

Just in case anyone is thinking of offering, if you've had a blood transfusion at any time you can't give blood. If ever that changes I'd be first in line to offer to participate.

Re msg 5 - I don't think so. I think it's entirely up to you if and when you give blood. Re msg 6. I'd really appreciate this thread not being turned fom it's stated purpose; ergo to ask people to give blood to a blood-bank that supplies persons in dire need irrespective of politics, regulation or obligation.

Gordon - will this be a regular event? the reason I ask is i give blood at the Girne donation days - but Lapta is a lot easier for me - I will not be able to this time as i have recently donated.

Re Msg 10: The lady who coordinates the BRS blood donor days wants to see how this first one goes. If it is successful - and I don't know which yardstick they use to judge that - then it will happen at Lmbousa twice a year.

Msg 2, I don't think there is an age limit over here, it appears that as long as you are well and healthy you can give. You will also be asked to fill out a questionnaire about health, illnesses and medication and they will let you know if you are suitable or not. I know of someone who is 70yrs and donates blood here.

Re Msg 12: there will be a blood drive on the 6th November at Iskele medical centre. Re Msg 15: Quite correct - the 65 year old upper limit is just a guideline and if a donor is hale and hearty then they can donate irrespective of age. Re Msg 28: borderline anemia would rule someone out I"m afraid.

If Msg 1 is running this under the disguise/umbrella of the BRS, avoid at all costs. The BRS will only protect and help their own members irrespective of where their source blood bank came from. "You have to be a member", otherwise not a hope in hell of getting any sort of help from them. Self-serving, tunnel visioned, bigoted organisation that they really are, jeopardising life! BLOOD Has only a maximum shelf life of 90 days for use. The more common rhesus blood groups are indeed, need to be kept in store/stock whilst the rarer groups of donors need to be 'on call' for quick donation. However, the BRS, with now a huge data file seem to be very protective of it and is not in the public domain for quick access in an emergency for non-members! Richard

Re Msg 35 Para 1. - Brinsley, you are entirely wrong. The blood drive is for for the TRNC Central Blood Bank. The Technicians drawing the blood are from the TRNC Central Blood Bank. Once the blood is collected and screened absolutely no one else has any control over how blood donated to said bank is used or allocated. Given we have over 2,000 people - ex-pat, Cypriot, Mainlander and other - through the Lambousa market in October I considered it a perfect opportunity to stage a blood-drive as it would be very convenient for those who regularly attend market-day. I asked the BRS to help with this because of their years of experience of coordinating with both the TRNC Central Blood Bank and ex-pats here. If you wwould rather then look at this as the Lambousa Blood Drive. But I kindly request that you refrain from allowing your personal feelings towards another organization have a detrimental effect on efforts for and on behalf of the TRNC Central Blood Bank. G Kent

103 donors today as I left. Many more wanted to donate but were unable to due to medication or blood pressure or other factors. A massive thank you to the technicians from the Central Blood Bank who gave their Saturday morning to collect the donations. A special thank you to Pru Lundy and all her ladies for so ably coordinating the donors and updating the data base. And of course a big thank you to all those who came to donate, whether they could give or not. It was really gratifying to see such a cross-cultural collection of ethnicities and nationalities rally to the cause.

I was very upset to read message 35! I know of someone who was helped only recently by Prue nd co, and without her help he may well have died. The efforts of BRS to help the Blood Bank have nothing to do with colour, race, creed or BRS membership. So, please don';t knock those who do nothing but good and are community minded. Most organisations which function in this world for members, DO operate on a members only basis, but the blood donatiion sessions with BRS are above petty restrictions. Maybe it would be nice to publicly apologise to the BRS for maligning them unnecessarily on this forum!

Msg 41 I've already been called upon by the BRS to donate blood for an individual which I readily and happily did. How they got my personal information is for conjecture. The BRS is a self-serving quango organisation who still owes me money! Richard

Richard, any issue you may have with the BRS is between you and them, and outside the topic of this thread. If you think they owe you money you should take it up with the BRS committee, rather than malign the particularly selfless work that Pru, Claire and the Blood Bank staff do. ANYONE who needs blood can ask Pru to find donors if the Central Blood Bank has insufficient stocks. You would never be turned away because you're not a BRS member. I think Maz is right - you owe Pru and her colleagues an apology.

Msg 43 I have broad shoulders and will happily apologise if I think I'm bang 'out of order', but on this occasion I'm NOT going to apologise to the BRS. My records are on their data base file which they asked if they could keep for use in emergency purposes only, which was agreed too. Enough said! Richard
