Sorry if this has been mentioned before but the way round restrictions from UK is to use a proxy server. There is one which offers a low cost trial - http://www.identitycloaker.com I used it earlier this year to watch the Masters golf live on the Masters website which is normally restricted to the US. Identity Cloaker offers you the choice of where you want the rest of the world to think you are

This site http://www.scothosts.com/ukpemails/Oct2010-CountrySwitch.html is very good and you have a choice of changing between PROXY or VPN IP addresses hiding your IP address. You also have the choice of which country you want to be in. I also use http://www.myprivatenetwork.com its cheaper at £5 pm but ok if you want to use some sites in the uk but VPN server is not available on this site yet I don't think, although I have not checked lately.

re msg 4 tighmonadh Hi there, tighmonadh historically Proxy Servers haven't allowed folks with slow connections - like 'TRNC' - the option to download ( as opposed to stream) content from BBC iplayer... is that resolved ? re msg 1 kaybezy I don't understand WHY we had to email you for the info for solutions that aren't free ! Your original posts was >> "re UK TV for free" << yet in the FIRST LINE of your email response you write >>remember ya don't get owt fer nowt.<< Your opinion on Sling box reflected my previously ignorant one before I tried it on a Synchronous ( same speed UP as down ! ) SDL* 100 bit line.. it works BRILLIANTLY on a fast uplink and a relatively slow downlink, when VPN streams are stalling. Really.. WHY didn't you JUST post your 'advice' in the open'?? It seems BIZARRE to join a forum and ask people to email your for how to get 'free' UK TV when the 'solutions' aren't FREE at all ?! :( * most UK folk have ADSL - MUCH sl

* most UK folk have ADSL - MUCH slower UP speeds - crucial for a sling box - than down.. and that's where they don't get good results from the sling box solution I owe you an APOLOGY !! You don't say the solutions are for 'free'... but I STILL don't get why we had to email you, when you could just post....

Thanks for the info re proxy servers here. Once speeds increase the need for elaborate satellite installations will vanish and we will get all our TV via the net. It has already started in the UK; actually I can get just about all I need on my Iphone ! I suppose we have to be patient. I have had my present house here in Kayalar for 20 years and when we first moved here from Lapta (because it was getting overdeveloped !) the only contact we had with the outside world was the BBC World Service on a short wave radio. Things have come a long way since then.

tighmonadh >>Once speeds increase the need for elaborate satellite installations will vanish and we will get all our TV via the net.<< As someone who will soon promote TV via the net I simply DO NOT agree.. ! IF you can get HD TV via satellite it is infinitely better than via the net - the resources tied up for HD content are approx 3 Mbs second per user.. if you can't get ther channels you want / fit a big enough dish THEN internet is the way to go.. If you disagree, setup a feed via the net and via ( say) satellite TV and ask 100 people which they prefer - even Virgin in the UK, can't supply the HD content and number of channels that are available to SKY sat subscribers.. We are a LONG way off internet taking over from Satellite

I have a slingbox in the UK connected my router and controlling a PVR, I have a Telsim dongle and a laptop in the TRNC and it works very well. I can watch live TV (BBC, ITV etc etc) or set the PVR to record and play back programmes at a later date. I have also just been speaking to a friend of mine who has sky in the UK and he maintains that he can log into his sky account on his laptop and watch live tv anywhere in the world - would this work in the TRNC?

mmmmmm Sorry but I just don't agree. You are right as things stand now but If the rate of change continues at It's present pace then extremely fast internet speeds are not that far off. Also, the huge changes in data compression would suggest that HD content will soon be available at rates much less than 3mbs. The H264 format is pretty close to HD in quality but takes up considerably less space. In Scotland where I have a 6 to 7 meg connection I can download an H264 movie in about 15 mins at the moment. Of course the problem in the UK is the existing copper wire lines and we are crying out for fibre optic ones. BT are beginning to upgrade but this is going to take some time. Here though I would have thought that it could be done more easily and quickly if the will, determination and organisation were there. It would of course be a waste of time to canvas peoples opinion at the moment because what we are discussing is not available. Getting rid of ugly dishes wd be great tho.

Dear Hatty, If he can access SKY player from outside the UK, it should work anywhere... I THOUGHT one needed a VPN to give a UK IP? Can anyone confirm this ? If not I will try from outside the UK... and report back tighmonadh Re sat TV 'disappearing' - we are YEARS away from that - if ever.. and you know why I KNOW that ? SKY have a contract to keep replacing satellites as they reach their useful life ( say 15 years) The one that will replace Astra2D - where BBC stuff mostly comes from - won't take over until 2014... so it is likely to be around until 2029 - at least.. For sure, SKY are now looking at the Internet - they bought Easynet and will soon have the equiv of BT Visions and Virgins catch up TV.. iplayer via the SKY box - but it's not HD quality.. As for unsightly dishes.. it is is technically possible that one 4.2m can supply 300+ homes in Cyprus - it's just not economically feasible - but it's coming !

Dear mmmmmm We will have to agree to disagree. You appear to feel that Rupert Murdochs monopoly will continue unchallenged for years to come. I feel that our experience over the past 3 decades overwhelmingly suggests that technological innovation will continue to accelerate and Murdoch's empire will be powerless to prevent it. We shall have to wait and see but I am looking forward to the ride !

tighmonadh ;) You appear to forget that Mr Murduch's empire has 'succeeded' by NOT being at the forefront of technology! 1/ BSB had Digital TV - remember the squarial? .. it would still be WAY ahead of the current dish technology SKY use 2/ The bits INSIDE a SKY box aren't the best / most sensitive receiver components - but they do the job..

Dear mmmmmmn By chance I happened to see the "Click" programme on BBC News this morning. There was a very interesting item about internet speeds in S Korea. Apparently they are looking at acheiving 1gbs download speeds in 3 years.

tighmonadh re msg 19 Great ! We can all live in S Korea and hope the internet in the rest of the world isn't far behind and that the North Koreans don't get too jumpy ! The picture - via the net - from the UK won't get better unless they have 3Mbits ( or more) UP - to watch in HD quality ! ....

Hi StGeorge1 I have tried the tiveni site, but tried to watch ITV but it kept buffering up every 5 secs and then sometimes stopped altogether. Is it because I only have 512 kbps - not well up on these things. Thanks

MM,re msg 15, I've just tried my skyplayer and got this message Sky Player is only available to users connecting from within the UK or Republic of Ireland, and you appear to be abroad. If this is not the case, check our Help section for advice or contact your Internet Service Provider [code 304].

Her indoors - MSG 21. You need at least 1mb download for good TV streaming. Someone - oneday - will bring decent internet to the TRNC and then we will all enjoy TV from around the world... ... ... ... ... .... .... .... ....WAKE UP GEORGE... WAKE UP!!! G
