I'm off to see a friend who's just had a baby and leaving at the very beginning of November for my birthday for 5days, 181TL return flight & 40TL a night B&B. Not too bad!

I've Googled some research on the City which doesn't look as inspiring as Istanbul. Anyone with first hand experience and personal recommendations to suggest what to do and see? Apart from bars, I'm interested in old buildings, history, museums etc. Comments welcome.

Cheers, Richard

I have been there on many occasions. I love Ankara! Unlike İstanbul, ıt is less crowded and a lot cheaper with everything.

I would recommend the famous rotating tower restaurant - similar to post office tower but shorter. Being on a hill gives it fantastic views of the whole city. By the time you finish your food you have gone round at least once! Shops on 3 floors + fish restaurants accross the road

The centre, KIZILAY - lots of shops with relatively cheap prices. Walking along the back streets (paralel to main road), you will find many small restaurants serving fantastic food. Some of them have music at nights in the form of violins etc.

FAVOURITE - On more than one occasion, I travelled just to eat the fantastic Bursa Kebab at the famed Bursa Kebabçı'sı in an area called OPERA. Every night people queue up to eat although there is no entertaintment! Short wait becz people know they must make room for others. Ask any taxi and you are there. You will not b

As I was saying - you will not believe your taste buds! You certainly will never eat kebap like that anywhere else again. You must ask for their speciality the "Bursa kebabı". The price? Definitely a lot cheaper than Niazi's! Then there is the Atatürk Park - close to centre and worth a stroll.
