I have read previous posts on this subject and I have to agree with some of the responses by saying, that some people are stuck in a time walk. I am of pensionable age, but I still appreciate the talent that is around today. I still appreciate the old classics, but there is so much talent out there today and it is so much harder to achieve their status, I think it's a shame it is not appreciated by us oldies.

I'm not saying I love everything they do, but I like bands such as the Kings of Leon, Foo Fighters, Queen's of the Stone Age, Panic Room, System of a Down, Placebo, Stereophonics, Kean and so many individual artists.

I liken music to handkerchiefs:

(Tissues) Instantly popular, then fades.

(Fine Linen) Modern classical music that stands the test of time.

(Silk) All the wonderful classical music, that has survived for decades.

All music has a value and I have to say, I appreciate almost all of it, with the exception of perhaps rap (I just don't like it)

MrsSnakes (msg 3), ignore my msg 2. You're of course free to answer the question in post # 1. I can hardly wait to read your and other replies.

Nadymou ! at first i thought it was another pooey post with someone trying to prove their own point about likes and dislikes regarding us entertainers on this "knocking website" but having given it some thought, I agree with some points you make. As a "musician" (and realise some experts out there disagree) I have been involved with some of the later acts and was surprised at the musicianship and talent around. Keane, who, whilst still at school, rehearsed at my studio/house in Kent and named their "band" after their House Matron, and I was so impressed with their musicianship and talent, and i was so pleased to meet "The Script" who are really very very good musicians. Just so are McFly who mostly play their own instruments unlike some of the "top" bands around now !!!! (thats why the need for us session people) !! I always play the Scripts "Man who cant be moved" at my gigs as it is a favourite with most who manage to move out of the Sinatra/Dean Martin crooning bore !! regards Barry

RE msg 1: "What is your favourite song/artist". Now, in which year do we start? This could be the longest thread in the history of C44. Let's go for it.

P.S. When did the chanson de nonne develop into a song?

P.P.S. This is for you, MrsSnakes, to take away your impression of me being, nasty, crude, sarcastic and what have you. The chanson is called "Aspre Fortune" and was composed in Cyprus somewhere around 1300. The manuscript belonged to a Lusignan princess who lived in St. Hylarion (nicknamed "Dieu d'Amour = God of Love") and... and... Mrs Snakes, ask Mr Snakes to close the curtains, light a candle and open a bottle of good wine! I hope you'll enjoy...

http://www.allcrusades.com/BB_pics/03_Aspre_Fortune.mp3

(5 minutes and 3 seconds, so please wait till this chanson in medieval French has downloaded and will start to play!).

I suppose some people are stuck a bit in a time warp, but hey if that what they like then thats up to them I guess, nothing wrong with it.

As a 60's child I still like some music from that era although rarley listen to it now, 70's and beyond is more me, as a teen in the 70's growing up with the Floyd, Led Zep, Yes ets etc etc, also really liked Supertramp, who I thought had a rather unique sound at the time. I still listen to some of this occasionally although I prefer to move with the times. My fave band of all time is James (just wish I'd discovered them much sooner) but also like Coldplay, Keane, Kings of Leon, the Manics and many many others. If I hear something I like then thats it, it matters not what genre it is. I think keeping up with the latest music (and liking it) also keeps you young in mind and body.

dutchcruisader,

I don't know you, but from your response, you sound a very synical person to me (I may be wrong) Despite you assumptions, I posted this topic on the spur of the moment. However, I may think twice before I post another. If you are not interested in the subjest, why did you take the time to read it. I think if someone goes to the trouble to post a topic on this website, it should be received objectively and not be an excuse for someone like you to redicule it.

In reply to the others who gave a positive response, I also like Script and Manic Street Preachers, great bands.

The good thing about being older is that you get to experience music from different decades. I was brought up with the Beatles, but also listened to my parents favourites, Nat King Cole and the like. I worked in a record shop while still at school and got to hear a wide spectrum of music Billy Holiday, Miles Davis, Harry James along with all the groups from the early 70's. Living in London I went to a concert at least once a month from the Marquee Club to Wembley and all in between. My CD collection, as sadly I had to sell my vinyl when we moved, reflects all those different genres. I recently went to see Scouting For Girls and last year Coldplay, but next week in Bury St Edmunds new concert venue there are Curved Air, Wishbone Ash, Hawkwind(but they have to call themselves Hawklord) and "for Hans" Focus are headlining on Saturday. My last CD purchases were Brandon Flowers and The Script.

My x boyfriend was a founder member of Iron Maiden, long before they became famous. Iron Maiden are good old Essex boys and in the early days, they regularly played at a pub called "The Ruskin Arms" which is the equvelant to Liverpool's Cavern Club (I visited it once, I think it is located in East Ham)

I loved listening to him talk about music, he could tell you the individual members of any band, who played what instrument and the history of what past bands they played with. As a bass guitarist, he had a particular interest in guitars and had a collection of over twenty. One of his guitars belonged to Stevie Marriot, of the Small Faces, who unfortunately died in a house fire. He was another good old essex boy.

I respected his knowledge of music and I miss the times we would sit with a glass of wine, feet up, either watching a documentary on VH1 about Kurt Cobain for instance, or just listening to music, unfortunately in every other way he was a complete and utter twat.

Nadymou I had to laugh at the last sentence you wrote about your ex being a 'complete and utter twat', in every other way. I was was just thinking the same about DutchCrusader. I agree with you that it makes you think twice about starting a thread only to be shot down in flames by somebody who thinks they are a 'clever clogs'. Regards, Mrs Snakes.

DutchCrusader, Please do not patronise me by telling me to read other threads, even some about Cyprus!! In message 2 you were rude and sarcastic to this Lady. Comments like yours are enough to make some people shy away from writing on the board. As for telling me to ask my husband to 'draw the curtains, light a candle and open a bottle of wine', heres a suggestion for you...read message 8

Like Paulw said because of our age group we can appreciate music from past to present, my tastes range from Ella Fitzgerrald / Frank Sinatra to AC/DC Status Quo and God, Eric Clapton and if by the way you have never heard Snakes do "Cocaine" then your missing a treat. But then again you could bore yourself to the point of suicide by reading DCs posts

Nadine,

Never let anyone put you off posting. Musical taste is just that, a matter of taste... I like everything from Gregorian Chant to Pop with all stops in between... and why shouldn't I?

Those who attempt to impose their taste on you are as bad as a waiter who won't let you choose from the menu.

I never thought I would like rap... but then I've just got into 'Plan B' and lo and behold... it ain't so awful after all... never thought I'd live to say that!

Favourite song/artist? sorry don't have one... depends on how I feel, and that's the point... you have to feel something. I do know that certain songs bring back memories like 'Miss Claire Remembers' - Enya or 'The Boys of Summer' - Don Henley and others make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up simply by the purity of vocal talent.... like 'Somewhere over the rainbow' by Eva Cassidy.

Thanks guys, for all your constructive input and I agree that music is a very indivdual thing. Some of the artists you mentioned, I have never heard of, but I will keep an ear open for them.

Snakes, I have not had the pleasure of hearing you play or sing yet, but hopefully I will one day. I have heard from other people that you are very good. I lived in a small village in Kent called Egerton Forstal, near Headcorn, there was a guy there who had a recording studio, thought it might have been you. Still, not far from Tonbridge

All the best guys, keep chatting.

Yes, music is about taste...but no one denies that there's good taste and bad taste, do they?
