anyone know about the "new" MOT laws, we have been told that ALL vehicles including new ones under 3 years old require a mot every year from the start of purchase. Add to this, there seems to be very large monthly fines for failing to comply (bet the locals don't have to do it.....) any info will help

cars newer than 3 years do not need an MOT, I doubt that locals will get away with not having MOT on their car. quite right there should be fines for driving a car without a valid MOT, why shouldnt there be?

I thought MOT's were every 3 years. If it is every year I am in big trouble for sure.

Macgiblet You have definitely been given a bum steer... New cars after three years and every three years thereafter as things stand. In addition an emissions test is required to coincide with the MOT... the confusion came in when the emissions test was yearly and not necessarily to coincide wit the MOT... but now they do. I believe the emissions test needs to be within a week of the MOT but both are at three year intervals.

We have no MOT's in Western Australia, don't know why but local Government will not bring them in, and some of the crap thats on the road is just disgusting, I think it's for revenue, because the cop's keep pulling guy's over issuing yellow stickers, then they have to put the car over the pit's to rectify any defaults, and I must say at quite a cost to the owner, so it's a big revenue earner, Robert

The MOTs are approximately every 3 years, don't rely on waiting for 3 years after purchase/registration date. Go to the car tax office, tell them your registration plate number and type of vehicle (private or commercial) and they will tell you the (2 week?) period in which you need to do your MOT. We nearly got caught out with our current car as it's registration's MOT period was after only 2 years 5 months! If you think the rules may have changed then best to check directly at the Car Tax office and not here...

MOT's are every three years for sure, just been through this, emissions tests are every two years for petrol and every year for diesel, as come-on-aylin says it can depend on the registration date of your car and that gives you the actual date for the MOT. Emission test can be any date as long as it is valid when you have your MOT.

I understood that the MOT was every 3 years and emissions test every year. Have they changed the law on emissions?

No not guessing yenibob, I have just had my car done and was told this at the MOT office, where i asked if i needed a new emissions test, I have one year to run on it if it was valid for 2 years (which it is being a petrol vehicle) and they said that is fine and i paid the tax. MOT's are every three years for regular vehicles simple as that.

We taxed our car yesterday for the first time, drove over from the UK. The vehicle is 6 months old and we were informed by the Tax office that we needed an MOT and Emission test. The friend we were with is a Turkish Cypriot and knows his way around the sytem, thank god, because even with him we were running around in ever decreasing circles. On the second time we had to return to the police MOT yard in Lefkosa he asked the examiner what was the reason behind the change and he was told that new cars are not examined when they leave the factory and apart from that he did not know why it was being done. There was a lot of very irate locals in the tax office yesterday and the MOT yard was overflowing so it does apply to them.

for none commercial vehicles it is every 3 years (older that 3 years) for MOT. The emissions test is every 3 years and should be done within 2 weeks of the MOT. I went to MOT my car and my emissions certificate was only 6 months old, they said go and get you emissions test done again so it corresponds with the MOT You can find out when your car is due taxing at the tax office, it depends on your licence plate number.

It also helps if your exhaust is attacthed to your rear spoiler with wire, and also try to have more than one light working.
