AJ, they will all light but only 1 will stay on. It's as if the gas stops running once you've stopped holding the knob down

Mike Is this a problem with a newly installed hob or one that has been working OK previously?

My father bought it as part of a house clearance then sold it on to our friends with an oven for £30 as is. So presumably it worked fine at one time. It looks fairly new. They got the oven working and one of the hob (thingies, can't for the life of me think of the word) but the other 3 won't stay on. We suspect it might be some sort of valve that needs replacing but not being gas fitters/repairers we wouldn't really know.

It sounds to me like you have a type of gas hob that has 4 individual thermocouples attatched (1 for each burner) it could be that the burners themselves are partially blocked and not allowing the correct amount of gas to envelope the thermocouple so could just need a clean out with something like a darning needle. failing that the thermocouples have broken down internally and need replacing. Hope this is helpfull Regards Jeff (Ex British Gas Service Engineer)
