Larger than life character with a big fat cigar when City was doing well. I remember him on the ITV panel of experts for the 1970 world cup in Mexico, very entertaining.

Malcolm Alexander Allison[1] (5 September 1927 – 15 October 2010)[2] was an English former football player and manager. Nicknamed 'Big Mal', he was one of English football's most flamboyant and intriguing characters because of panache, fedora and cigar, controversies off the pitch and outspoken nature.

I too was surprised at his age and how long ago his managerial career was. On reflection, he seems to have been reincarnated in Ron Atkinson of smaller hat, but gold adornments, and the same large ego. Sad news and also brings back memories of Brian Clough.

I got his autograph years ago when he was managing in Portugal. We went to a restaurant and low and behold 'Big Mal' was sitting at a table. After an hour or so he got up to leave and I thrust a table napkin at him and asked him for his autograph. He said "you're a long way from home" I replied "so are you Mal".

Big Mal.....we had a few choice words after he took Palace to Chelsea in the FA Cup and won 2 -3. Ended up having a beer or two after the game and realised he was an artist of wind up.

...and a forward thinker in coaching, too. Insisted on two-touch football in practice. He wrote (or co-wrote) and excellent coaching manuel-'Soccer for Thinkers'- in 60s. Generally regarded as a much-better-coach than a manager.
