From Washerman

>>mmmmmm - if someone refuses to answer, it's common practice to ask the same question in a different way, but even then, you don't answer - if we compare each other's results - what does it prove? <<

It would be clear to anyone - other than you - that the question was answered THREE times... :(

Hence my decision to start a new thread to stop you deliberately derailing a thread that actually helps folk...

I now ask myself why you are so anxious to 'pooh pooh' a test that folks use all over the world and is suggested by consumer bodies ? ;)

>>Does it prove that NC's internet connections compared to connections in the UK are crap? Well, do we really need to prove that? I think everyone knows! <<

Not only will it do that, but it will show localised problems and alternatives.. I am surprised as a local YOU didn't think of this !

>>Does it compare the quality of local provider's connections?<<

YES, if enough folk post regularly and it is collate

if you want to be 'useful' how about volunteering to host a pingtest server locally ?

More red herring nonsense :

pingtest.net doesn't just do a ping test - does it Washerman..?

If someone has pingtest.net server in 'TRNC' the locals could choose it to test on and have a LOCAL reference..

As it is now, folks in 'TRNC' are all probably pointed to the same server for testing anyway....

Again.. your Zen internet test doesn't give us a recordable results format

We can just as easily nominate a UK based server for pingtest.net ... and all use that, right ?

YES, results vary - that's why we all do lots of tests...

Slingbox testing involves other criteria that *I* choose to do with Hans as he is knowledgeable, and has Macs and PCs - unlike you we are using more than one sling box and more than one location .. it is a proper test to check if it is even worth offering the service in 'TRNC'...

re 80 / 81 http://www.cyprus44.com/forums/47666.asp

you assume that everyone is using the same browser as you....for your Zen test

For example I'm using Chrome on this PC.. I get no such option...

Did you volunteer to be a pingtest.net host, yet ?

If not, please STOP polluting t'other thread... HERE is the place for us to be techie, OK ?

Washerman,

As you didn't start the thread - nor have the idea, kindly let others post their info...

THIS thread can be used for constructive comments as to how to improve the accuracy of the tests and any results..

Could that be any clearer?

>>I suppose that, as I have suggested this test, and that the purpose to compare our connection speeds in Northern Cyprus, that everyone should close all other applications and make sure that you are the only one using your connection at the time of the test.<<

Sorry, I REALLY don't get what you are saying.. Are you STILL referring to your Zen test - which is 'useless' as a reporting tool for the purposes of the concept ...

Now did you register as pingtest.net host? - THAT would be GREAT and USEFUL !

>>ISP's tell their clients to use the ping and speed test because (usually) it only tests their connection to Turkey and the results favour them,<<

There is already the option for all of us to chose the same server in the UK

(cont) in pingtest.net

Let's agree one, and together we can make a worthy test and get folks concrete data that they CAN use to decide on a good ISP for their location

>>just received a service call who tells me that using the speed test that mmmmmm is suggesting - his connection is showing that he is receiving his 1Mb quota, but that despite this, his iPlayer TV system is not working - it just keeps buffering.

I asked him where he was testing to and he was testing to Nicosia. What is the point when iPlayer comes from servers in the UK?

There should have been certain criteria laid down when mmmmmm suggested this test, but there wasn't and now people are confused. <<

and IF you'd stop pontificating we could agree *the* reference UK server - that already exists on the pingtest.net - and you could even produce a local reference one by volunteering to be a pingtest.net host...

The only confusion here is that caused by you..:(

>>As you continue to pollute THIS thread and clearly cannot understand simple English ( asking the same questions when answered ) and continue to 'push' a test that is useless as a reporting tool. and yet DOESN'T respond to positive requests for a common server to test in the UK - we have to wonder ..<<

Suggest you note I'm not the only one observing that you came late and ARE the 'personality' that is disruptive:(

>>Internet bandwidth is a problem in North Cyprus, especially at busy times and don't forget, the majority of internet connections are shared connections! <<

DUH?! 99.9% of all domestic and commercial connections are shared - there are varying levels of local contention and then we go down shared routes to / from Europe !

>>Any Slingbox connection supplied by me would always carry a warning that on a shared connection, speed is not guaranteed and that therefore, at busy times, the system will struggle. <<

Better still - any one should TRY it before buying it, right . as for some it works GREAT ! How many test slings do YOU have at your disposal - and what is the available throughput per slingbox ? ( mine is 2.4 Mps)

Mark - why don't you have your own website? Then you can spout what you like, when you like, as many times as you like!

cont

>>how does the speed test that you have suggested get around the bandwidth shaping policies that some ISP's implement here? ie. 1Mbps connection for three minutes and then fallback! Your test only lasts about a minute. Another reason that it is no good!<<

DUH!

Did you READ the bit about testing several times times a day...? it's about building up a picture.. Your 'alternative' - as I KEEP telling you doesn't have a reporting feature.

Please find a better solution - I'm sure all the consumer organisations that recommend the one I found would LOVE to hear from you ....
