He's getting a bit out of hand. He's had my mum on the floor twice, yesterday he managed to pull me down the steps 3 times. (Buggered knee now)

He's a lovely dog when he behaves himself. (most of the time)

We can't take him for walks or let him loose in the garden because of the poison that some tw@t has put down.

Hi Mike, I totally understand about the poison and poor Efes has had enough of that already. A few thoughts, how about a muzzle so you can take him out. The one fabulous thing here is you can let your dogs run off the lead, but of course you need to protect them from poison.

Another thing that may be of interest to you, is for you to become the pack leader. Yes it sounds funny doesn't it. Have a look at Ceaser Milans website http://www.cesarsway.com/ , I have learnt a tremendous amount from him on training our dogs. They have become sociable dogs now, never beg for food from us or strangers. Also, Zeytin who was very anxious when we first had him has stopped biting people and become very calm.

Good Luck Mike.

thanks julia, will look at that website.

Efes already knows I am the alpha male in the pack.

I do actually bite him from time to time if he's being naughty.

A short lead and a thin stick a light and i mean a light tap on the nose as he pulls will soon have him walking to heal.

Then extend the lead gradually using nicely as a word of encouragement to walk without pulling.

Dogs are like woamen they need to know who is boss .

Not easy to train but when you do they are a pleasure.

Why not put a muzzle on him for walks then he is safe from poison. So many people lose their dogs this way so it must be a safer option.

LaptaMike. Just to let you know that we have three dogs and one of them sounds just like Efes. The only person that can hold him when out for a walk is my husband and we have now resorted to taking him for rides in the car just to get him out of the house. (He actually loves this!) We have tried lots of different methods to stop him pulling but nothing has worked and as he is a big dog we were often falling over. He is a very loving dog and often has visitors wobbling when he jumps up to kiss them. Anyway, what I wanted to say was, Don't give up. Sometimes it takes a long time. Our dog is four and whilst, he has made lots of improvement he is still a handful. We also have an older and a younger dog who I can walk anywhere with. Take heart and just remember that Efes has a far better life than he would have on the street.

You might want to try a Gentle Leader headcollar. They're brilliant, you'll have him walking at your heal in no time. They're available in Turkey so you should be able to get one sent over..

thanks Lauvaine, Efes loves rides in the car aswell. The other day I actually let him get on the front seat so he could see better but I think it scared him a little bit because he moved onto the back seat where he normally is. One of the funniest things I saw a month or 2 back, someone drove into the row of shows where the Turk Bank is in Alsancack, it was a pickup and in the back was a German Shepherd, stood there. He seemed to love it.

Yes, we have a jeep type car and our dogs love to sit at the back with their heads hanging out to catch the breeze. Some mornings we just drive them up and down the new road as they like to go fast!

AllyTT, thanks for the suggestion but we already have a special head collar. We have also tried a control harness, a normal harness and as a last resort a choke collar. We will keep trying though. We are also lucky in that we have a large garden that the dogs can race around in.

Off with his goolies!

Our lab was totally unmanageable as a pup and young dog. When walking he pulled so hard he would almost choke himself. For several years he had to wear a harness instead. Now he's older (about 4) he's absolutely fine. The greatest improvement came after he had the operation.

This behaviour is possible to change with a little patience. Try a halti harness if you have someone coming from the UK soon. If not try this:

Get the dogs lead out and hold it till he has calmed down and will sit to let you put it on. Do not respond in any way to jumping, barking or any other behaviour till he shows the behaviour you want. Open the front door and start to walk until he pulls then stop, turn round (even if this is after 2 steps) and ignore the dog till he calms down, then turn round and start again. Repeat this till you are so bored that you think you will never get the dog to go for a walk of even 200 yards and then continue to repeat it. I got this from the dog whisperer and it does work but you have to be very patient. my english spaniel (rescue dog) had no idea how to lead walk and used to pull like nobodys business the more I shouted and got wound up the worse he became. Got this tip tried it and it worked!

best of luck

Mike

Think you live in Lapta? drive up the mountain to Baspinar and up to the flags - you can let Efes run free there. There is no poison there as far as we know, rarely see other people up there. Just don't go on a Sunday during hunting season.

Unfortunately it's not my decision to make whether to keep trying with him or not. I've been voted 2 to 1 against keeping him so unless either my mum or my dad have a change of heart........................

If they dont have a change of heart it looks to me that you have no choice but to pack their bags and show them the door, you will be surprised what a little gentle persuasion can achieve !!
