We have a holiday home in Tatlisu - but we find that after a week of doing the restaurants and bars and socialising we tend to get bored. We have done the castles, beaches etc., just wondering what do you full timers do for a culture shock - is it a case of popping over to Istanbul for the museums and exhibitions?? Any contributions (not jokes) would be appreciated. Jackie

Hit the mountain footpaths and go in search of things long lost and forgotten! There is so much in the hills that are never reported on or are off the normal beaten path for the tourist - no car access, no chair lifts, no pub at the end etc - but worth finding and just spending time listening to the history go past you.

If it’s possible, bring with you the interests that you have in your home country. If you enjoy doing them there then during your time in the TRNC they may be equally, if not more enjoyable, especially if they are outdoor activities. Holidays are not always just fetching the stick. I often wonder what some people will do when their retirement eventually comes and they find they have “nothing to do”. I think that is quite sad. Pop up to KAR and take some dogs for a walk and take a pic nic. Doing them a favor and the dogs will love it too.

Thank you for your contributions. My boyfriend and I have lovely walks in the hills and collect pine cones for our fire place. Chegwin - my boyfriend and I adopt about 8/9 cats when we're over (not incuding the odd fox and dog) - my boyfriend thinks nothing of driving from Tatlisu to Catalkoy (Supreme supermarket) in order to buy food for them. We love nature and we love TRNC - but we don't intend to retire there though. Our home is in the UK. Istanbul is on our list of places to visit - we also want to visit Gazientep - the food there is meant to be very special indeed.

And what happens to all the cats when you leave? Nice jesture but visitors feeding cats then leaving after a week or two becomes a real pain for residents and other visitors. By the way I love all animals including cats.

Chegwin I'm sure you do - but I cannot enjoy my holiday when starving animals come to my back door, what am I supposed to do?? I simply cannot ignore them like other people do - I'm sorry it is not in my nature. Anyhow, we just look after them for the time that we are there and I know that other people do the same on our site .. and to be honest I'm not really a 'cat person' so to speak. Anyhow, my main question was about what do you full timers do for culture that's all I want to know at the moment. Are there are any art galleries with exhibitions in TRNC, for example. Thanks Jackie

Re : Msg 11, If you are a great lover of art, book tickets to any of these destinations: Florence, Rome, Vienna, Bilbao, Madrid, Cologne etc... Otherwise look here , I think there are some good suggestions from DC on how to occupy a bored soul: http://www.cyprus44.com/forums/47736.asp (Of course, if you haven't "done" these yet...

Thank you Clarissa for your contribution and I note all what you say. My boyfriend and I are well travelled and my original message here was just to find out really what was on offer in TRNC culturally apart from visiting castles etc. I am an art lover and indeed used to own an art gallery in Essex a couple of years ago. My brother's brother (Ian Millman) who has lived in Paris for many years (my boyfriend and I are regular visitors) is the world expert on Georges de Feure. Louise Bourgeois is one of my favourite artists and I am looking forward to visiting the new art gallery at 25 Savile Row, London where they are showing an exhibition of her works. Thanks Jackie

Have you been to Mavi Kosk (Blue House) on the way to Gazulyert, very interesting. Closed on Monday's and you need your passport to get into the Military area. Details are on the website I gave you.
