In case some expats would like to understand what people in our host country TRNC are taught and believe: you can obtain a free copy (in English) of the Holy Koran (many spellings allowed) at the Mosque in Girne (near the old harbour; btw: the Mosque used to be the office of the Venetian proveditore, the district governors between 1189-1570, in Kyrenia).

As British expats in TRNC undoubtedly know this line in msg 1: "the district governors between 1189-1570" is wrong. Typo. It should read: "the district governors between 1489-1570".

DC

Is there anyone specific you have to contact or is it just a question of going into the mosque and picking a copy up

RE msg 3, ImnEr: (...) Is there anyone specific you have to contact or is it just a question of going into the mosque and picking a copy up (...)

=> I went inside during a prayer time, stayed on the side and was approached by a gentle man, who asked if I am a believer. When I said no, that I was just interested, he kindly offered me the (free) Holy Koran in the English language.

Hans,

Is it the Penguin Classics version or another one? The one I have is a revised translation with an introduction and notes by N J Dawood.

That's great to know, I have a friend who wanted to borrow mine and I felt terribly guilty because I didn't want to part with it. I've been looking for one since to give her.

My geography is a little vague! The only mosque I'm familiar with in the centre is the big one on the left as you drop down in to Girne on the dual carriageway from Lefkoşa. Is that the one?

=> No, Mick, it's not. I lent my copy to a Dutch friend, but it will be back shortly and then I'll answer the question.

=> No, Pippie, it's not. It's the one on this map, near the old harbour: http://www.allcrusades.com/BB_pics/Cyp_map_Kyrenia_1300_Newman_1947.jpg
