We were talking yesterday of what might happen if full EC rules were implemented here.

One line of thought went as follows:

- all EU citizens would be allowed to vote (but Turkish, Russian etc. citizens would not)

- in local elections all householders (whether full time resident or not) would be eligible to vote

- voters must be given a postal vote if requested

- there must be enough UK ex-pat votes in Lapta to win an election if we all agree on a single candidate because the TC vote is split across several parties

What do you think???

Re : Msg 1,

I'm all for it: there are British Mayors in Spain and France after all.

It would be nice to exercise the right to vote in local elections.

Like that's gonna happen!

Getting ex-pats to agree on anything at all strikes me as unlikely.

Imfomation is power.

You miss the point. If TRNC fully joins the EU then the 'visitor' on my visa stamp means nothing because all EU laws will override TRNC laws.

For example:-

you could not stop any EU citizen from working here

you could not stop any EU citizen from starting a business here

every EU citizen will have the right to live here as a resident and they will have the right to vote

ummm, don't know if it will be quite as simple as that, when we lived and worked in Italy we still had to apply at the police station for our permesso di sojorno (Permission to stay) even though we were europeans. None of the other european countries seem to be as stupid as the UK letting in all and sundry without any questions.

I do think the work permit issue would be resolved but as for voting, I doubt it will ever come to pass.

Fuat Namsoy goes a great job and he can get most things through the Government - he has massive support in the polls ever since he stood first as an independent then UBP. I cannot remember the correct date but must have been about 15 years ago he first stood and I think he does a great job.
