Today and probably tomorrow I'll upload several pages (text, exclusive pictures and maps) about the vanished City of Lambousa, the adjoining Byzantine Akhiropietos monastery, the Ayos Evlalios church and the rock-hewn Ayos Evlambios chapel.

The monastery, church and chapel are on Turkish Army land (Alsancak) and I have not been able to inspect all the buildings inside. However, I like to thank the Turkish Army for giving me the opportunity to make pictures in the officially "forbidden zone"!

DC,

Excellent. It is not easy to find information on the ruins of the churches in this area.

So will be looking forward to the next picture installment.

Thanks a lot.

Clarissa

P.S. I'm still fascinated and playing with Bo's panoramic pictures on his website! Superb.

P.P.S.Would it be possible to see on your site the panoramic picture of St. Hilarion ( some time in the future? ) ?

=> I agree! [ http://www.prorama.nl ] I just received a movie from my friend who was working in Berlin this week. He made pictures from a hot air balloon at 150 metres above the German capital, the city state of Berlin. You can watch the movie here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4rltfuW6Js

=> Good to remind me, I had forgotten. Sorry. I'll prepare the pictures for uploading this week end. Promise!

DC, the mosaics that seem to surround Ayos Evlalios (photo here http://whatson-northcyprus.com/interest/kyrenia/st_evlalios.htm ) would indicate that the church was of some importance at one time. Do you have any information about how far the mosaics extend, as the look as if they have yet to be excavated.

I'd be interested in your photos of the monastery, as I have only been able to photo it through the wire. I've been told by people in the antiquities department that the army plan to move out at some stage to allow the monastery to be renovated.

RE msg 6, ianwfs: (...) that the army plan to move out at some stage to allow the monastery to be renovated. (...)

=> Ianwfs, I have to say that the monastery seems to be in better shape than I've seen many other Byzantine/Lusignan remains in TRNC. It won't make me more popular than I am when I say that I wish the Turkish Army had "occupied/liberated" more priceless parts of the world heritage in Northern Cyprus - for a permanent stay...

=> Clarissa2, I don't know how you do it (unless you are Dutch..!) but your reply is PERFECT, POLITE Dutch! The best in almost seven years in TRNC. Hulde!

Re : Msg1,

DC,

I am very interested to know the name of the Church (ruins now) not far from the hotel and "Moscito" beach.

What is its significance as it still attracts a lot of visitors from the other side on certain dates?

Is it Agios Andreas Church? I can not find any decent information on it.

I am confused...

Re : Msg8,

DC, I am afraid these are only a couple of phrases I remember from the time when I lived in Germany when we used to drive across the border to the Netherlands for a spell of sightseeing or dining at weekends.

I still can read, say, an article from a newspaper, but beyond this - alas, no.

Some time ago I also had a Dutch boss. As the official language of the project was English, he used to write all personal notes and communications with the head office in Dutch and leave it for everyone to see firmly believing no one could possibly understand it.

Little did he know...

=> St Andreas Monastery (not: church) is located in the Karpaz, where Greek speaking Cypriots and other believers think that Paul (St Paul) came ashore to spread the Christian religion. There is, says this non-believer, not the slightest shred of evidence that Paul really chose this deserted part of the panhandle to land. Oh, well, when one is a believer, fairy tales are esily becoming "facts"...

Whatever, the authorities (GC monks/priests) make a lot of money there (on TRNC soil!), selling "holy" candles and other "holy" things. Commerce, just commerce...

Look here, centuries old arrogance and deceit pictured, inside the monastery: http://www.allcrusades.com/BB_pics/DSC_2907_72.jpg
