Visited this house yesterday, well worth a visit. It was built in the late 50's my a unpleasant chap called Paul Paulides who the lawyer for Makarios, also alleged gun runner.

Interesting history for the house, there is an English script you can take round with you, great views across the valleys below. You should allow about an hour to stroll around.

2YTL to get in, its on Army land, so you must take your passports with you. Not open on Mondays, its signposted from turn off for Camibel, about 1 mile past main army base.

Just for the record and the search engine on this site: the "Blue House" ("Blue Mansion" is a more exact translation) is called "Mavi Köşk" (Koshk if you have Turkish fonts on your computer) and Camibel is called Çamlibel. The owner was called Pavlides, not Paulides. He also owned the "White Mansion" near St Hilarion castle, where as far as I know Pavlides also built the stand-alone, imitation "medieval" tower.

Anyway, here's a map to easily find the "Mavi Köşk": http://www.allcrusades.com/BB_pics/Cyp_west_Mavi_Koshk.jpg

We visited the Blue house (aka - the Mafia House) on the last day of our holidays and so pleased we did, it was fascinating and could have spent a lot longer there......I am intrigued to know more about the golden key found in the safe, along with the twenty pound note, anyone have any ideas????

apparantly for those that ARE interested, after Pavlides escaped through his secret tunnel he then blew up the tunnel entrance so nobody would find it, the safe was found hidden in a wall and to this day nobody has ever discovered what lock the golden key opened. He escaped to an English household and was later killed by the Mafia in Italy in the 80's.........

Hi all,

Also an extra note to add:

There are also rumoured to be secret underground passages and chambers built to hide contraband and smuggled arms.

Cheers,

There is an awful lot of tosh posing as fact in the 'talk' giving by the guides...

Example: Think about the 'wine fountain' and ask yourself... would you drink wine from a fountain if it had been going around and around picking up the wonderful bouquet of the fountain's structure? I would hope not.

It's just part of the web of falsehoods created to demonize the man... Not that he was particularly nice by all accounts but a lot of it is rubbish. Keep your wits about you and question what you are told.

RE msg 10, Groucho: Well said. A lot of what you are told there is pure propaganda. Visitors are cheated in several places in the "Blue Mansion".

Here's an example (I've photographed several there), a portrait in one of the halls, to show Byron Pavlides' crooked character as an "American style Mafioso": http://www.allcrusades.com/BB_pics/byron_pavlides.jpg

Now look carefully at this picture, a cut out of the picture above. Badly done, but the visitors don't see this pre-Photoshop cheat: http://www.allcrusades.com/BB_pics/Byron_Pavlides_web_cut_out.jpg

I'm sure this man was not nice, but...

Due to the lack of an edit function on this board, I'll post again.

Some interior photos here. http://whatson-northcyprus.com/interest/guzelyurt/mavi_kosk.htm

And I agree with DC. For whatever reasons, The Turkish army wants to further blacken the character of somebody that was probably working on the fringes of legality.

We have been there twice - it is a fascinating place and definitely worth visiting - although I wonder how the locals would have felt all of that splendour when they were living in poverty.

Also Re message 1 - I thought it was built in 1971?

I wonder how they feel about the 5 star hotels when some are still living in poverty...

The Mavi Köşk is hardly a palace....
