Cyprus Today, October 23: North Cyprus: Famagusta: it's almost too late too save the Walled City: http://is.gd/gctxf But what do we care about old stones in Famagusta - as long as hotels are built in TRNC of 220, 150, 120 etc million US dollars..? Tourism, what sustainable tourism... :-( _____________________________________ Think different (the best ever Apple slogan)

To be fair to the tourism thing, it isn't possible to see the walled city unless you have very fortunate circumstances or are lucky enough to have someone like yourself posting the photos. The hotels are a bit out of price for the average tourise aswell so unless something changes for the whole island there will be no sustainable anything me thinks.

DC, True about what you say, but I have seen that their showing efforts to save the Walled city. They have been using different kinds of stones to help support the structure and original stones from collapsing.

Re : Msg 1, Interesting that Cyprus Taday's article mentions that UNESCO is "unable to provide financial assistance". My understanding always has been that UNESCO did spend very substantial amounts of money on multitude of restoration projects. I've seen several plaques on historic buildings of Famagusta confirming that. P.S. I'm very much surprised to see Sans Souci on the same list.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if UNESCO's money went into funding a few more Mercs, Range Rovers and Porsche Cayennes, BMW's, etc.; so, consequently, having sussed it, they suspended further 'donations'!!!
