Yes, in essence that is right. If you are a resident then you must have an NC licence or you are driving illegaly and will be fined and your insurace will be void. If you are a non resident then you have over stayed your visa if you have been driving for more than 3 months and should ow become a resident i which case the first part of the statement applies.

At least thsoe were the rules 3 weeks ago and I haven't heard of anything changing since then.

proger1, if you go over the border then does that not constitute a new 90 day visa? (When they stamp it 90 days when you come back) Therefore not overstaying your visa?

But Mike, that is getting a new vistiors visa for a further 90 days so theoretically it would mean you are not driving illegally but I am not the policeman.

In my case, I know I have said this before so sorry for being borig and repetative, I am there for a month and out for a month so in a 7 month period I have been driving for more than three months potentially but I will be on my at least 3rd visa and I can not get a residency because I am out iof the country for too many days per year.

I essence, I will be driving in NC for approx 6 months per year but cannot get residency and therefore can not get a TRNC licence so it is catch 22 if they don't count visit visa renewals as another 3 months of UK licence driving.

It is probably a redundant statement as I am guessing that the friend holds residency and should have a TRNC licence.

Maybe someone in the BRS could advise, or go to the Police Station (or get someone to go for you) to find out.

If you are living here, it used to be (I think) 6 months top whack before having to get a TRNC one.

But things change here so quickly, that it is vital to get up to date information from a correct source.

Good luck.

something I did notice proger1, on my last exit they did ask if I was driving a certain car reg no. even though it's registered in my fathers name.

Made me think hmmmm.

If you get a speeding ticket (for example) at the crossing, shouldn't it be in the registered owners name? Not the current driver? I don't speed personally because there are too many bad drivers over here to allow it.

(Before anyone has a go, I am an Advanced Driver, have been since I was 17. I know when it's safe to drive faster than the speed limit safely, my instructor and the bloke who gave me the test were both police pursuit driving instructors)

In my experience which granted is not alot and isn't the same as everyone else, it doesn't matter who was speeding at the time, when you get the ticket which in my case was registered to the garage we bought the car from at the time so they got the ticket, you go to the police station, you show them your licence, in my case the UK one and you pay the fine. I have done this twice now and I am pretty cofident it was my wife on both occasions as I was out of the country at the times, anyway they happily took my money and gave me a reciept. I suppose the benefit is as far as I am aware that I do not get any points on my UK licence whereas I think my wife would have if she had gone into pay the fine but it is easier for me because I don't have the baby to carry around which was our reason for me going but as I said I don't think I will get points.

I hired a car last year for just two weeks on my UK driving licence & NZ passport without any problems having my fourth year 'visitor' guest stamp in the passport. VISITOR not resident, so any current EU or World driving licence should do.

Sorry may have lost the plot a little, say if I bought a car with TRNC plates, but I normally visit in three week bursts 3 or 4 times a year, can I drive this car on my UK licence.

Proger, I think if you get pulled for speeding, you don't receive any discount on your next car tax, that is your penalty. I maybe wrong, but I'm sure you need a Turkish driving license after three months of residing here.

Not sure about people who use the 90day visa though.

Chelpet, this is how I drive when I am in North Cyprus. Car is on TRNC plates, registered to me, insurance in my name although it is for the car and any authorised driver, I am non resident ie 90 day visas every time and I have never had a problem legally with this situation even though I have been to the police station twice about the car.

You might be right about that but I wasn't aware I got a discount the last time, I just paid what they tiold me I had to pay
