Distance to the Horizon

How far can we see across the water to the horizon?

Let r = the Earth's radius = 3963 miles

Let h = height of a person in miles

Let d = distance seen to the horizon in miles

The sight line of a person to the horizon would be on a line passing through their eyes and tangent to the Earth at the seen horizon.

Since the radius of any circle is perpendicular to the tangent, the tangent and the radius make the legs of a right triangle. The radius plus the person's height (in miles) are the hypotenuse. We can then use the Pythagorean Theorem. Be careful to convert the person's height into miles.

c2 = a2 + b2

thus ( r + h )2 = d2 + r2

then d2 = ( r + h )2 - r2

d = sqrt ( ( r + h )2 - r2 ) )

Examples: A person with eyes 6 feet off the surface would see approximately 3 miles. From the Bank of China building (1033 ft tall) you would see approximately 39.4 miles.

Does this answer your question

The water spout was clearly visible but then we live half-way up the hill in Esentepe... you may however have hit on Richard's problem... being a short-arse as he is...

Objects not on the horizon, e.g. in the sky can be seen for much further of course... so your example only applies to objects on the surface of the earth.. i.e. given your height above sea level, how far you can see on the horizon before the earth curves away - not, how far you can see?

Took a picture but the sky was so dark and I was rushing to snap before it disappeared... it was moving at speed....

Groucho, please support my plea to Izzet for an edit button...

Btw: on this board you don't have to write etc in front of an URL - just the URL.

But..., you have to copy or type the right URL, which you did not do in this case: postimage.org.

so: (but this is not necessary on this board, as I said above) and a double domain name in the URL doesn't work when you put a ] in the middle.

Groucho, please support my plea to Izzet for an edit button...

Hippo, by the time I did your maths, factoring in having one eye 2 inches higher than the other, and using the Wildebeest's (bless her) binos, I could see no trace of the Water Spout referred to in the earlier post and I suspect it is by now underneath a Filipino in a deckchair about halfway across the Pacific !

Hi Groucho,

What we seen in Tatlisu, was before it progressed into a tornado. My wife asked me what was this coming in on the sea. When I looked it seemed as if it were a flock of birds, skimming over the water, still looking at it in more detail, it was rotating along the sea. It was only a few meters out and heading inland by SeaTerra Reserve, it then veered off towards Esentepe and out further to sea. I tried to look at it and follow it through my camera zoom lens, but was moving and rolling alone to get it focused.

Hope this helps as your post helped me to understand what it was.

Cheers.

Colliedog,

Yes we see them quite often but by the time this one was fully formed it was moving back east from Esentepe towards Tatlısu.

Given the distance it must have been several hundred metres long (high)...

Not sure what you are on about... Richard and I rib each other regularly... but then we know each other.

This one was massively bigger and much more formed in the classic tornado funnel that reached right up to the cloud base... several hundred metres in height... Unfortunately it was still quite dark being early morning and the large volume of dark thunder clouds didn't help.
