Must have been a distress flare! There is a helicopter doing a search-sweep out there just now.

HotHippo I have been watching (as per usual) the search and rescue exercise tonight but did not see any distress flares going off. Incidentally the exercise has just finished and apart from using a search light whilst hovering over the sea the two helicopters had no other navigation/flight lights on. The exercise took place just off of Camelot beach. AJ

Pretty much what we saw too, AJ. I was guessing that a flare might have been set off, which might explain the "ball of fire". Because of the lack of navigation lights, the arrival of the second helicopter threw us a bit. Did one of them set down at the base beside Camelot Hotel?

If they followed the procedure that they carry out in the day time then yes there is always one that lands there presumably to offload any casualties. I have seen them carry out night exercises before but it is the first time I have seen them (well heard them rather than seeing them) flying without lights. They almost always fly directly over my villa but tonight I could hear them but could not see them. AJ

If it's flying and you do not know what it is, then by definition it is a UFO (to you).

For those that didn't see it... It was not a flare, nor a lantern. It was low in the sky and more like a burning comet or small asteroid. It headed out to sea. I was at a garden birthday party in Ozankoy and pretty much everyone saw it.

It came over our house not from direction of the sea. To high and large to be a flare. Why is it some people always have to be nasty with there comments? why cant they just say nothing on 44.

Msg 13: We saw one Sunday night also, definitely not a shooting star, heading west along coast of Karsiyaka - was an amazing sight, so maybe the same one you saw.
