A Turk/Yank friend of mine is visiting me today?. This must be the journey from hell. Left Chicago but due to high winds? (It's always windy there!) diverted to Denver, then to NY onward to Amsterdam to change at Frankfurt for Istanbul to connect to an Ercan flight. Phone call from Istanbul to tell me that all his luggage has been lost so untill it's sorted might just make the last flight out tonight at 10.30pm, he's been on the go for 38 hours so far, yet to arrive at his final destination! The joys of flying, may aswell read the 'Fear of Flying' by Erica Jong! Richard

So if I read this right he left Chicago on the great lakes, diverted almost due southwest to Denver and the rockies before flying northeast to New York. I know high winds were forecast for the upper midwest but that's a detour and a half!

I'll report more accurately when he eventually arrives, so I stay up drinking at home awaiting his arrival as he pays 18TL for a beer, stuck in Istanbul Airport! Richard

poor man. Why did he bother? How would it have taken him without all the pavlova? (I know I spelt it totally wrong, it's intentional ;-)

it takes me 24 hours at least, including layovers, to get from Ercan to DC (Dulles or National, makes no difference). Add in a couple hours driving, or 6 hours if the flight to NY is a lot cheaper than the flight to DC, and we're looking at 30 hours door to door from Ercan to the East Coast. Still though, his journey sounds extra rough. I've taken to booking to London, then London to Ercan. You end up with a shorter layover than if you have to get to Istanbul and you have only 2 flights. If he's coming from Chicago I can't imagine Chi to London + Pegasus or whatever is more expensive than Turkish Airlines all the way. Also, Chicago is notorious as the worst place in the US to fly from due to its location next to Lake Michigan causing terrible weather. I avoid O'Hare airport at all costs.

I couldn't do that. I would have to stop off for a day or two in different places on the way. I suffer from a bad back so if I'm sat in an airline seat for more than 6 hours I'm in agony.
