Is there anyone putting on a proper bonfire and fireworks display for Nov 5th?

In a country as dry as this one, I doubt it very much.

Why would they celebrate something that happened hundreds of years ago in another country? Come to that why do it at all?

Have a bonfire and you will probably be arrested! Fireworks? We had enough of them throughout Summer in Girne. Each time there is a wedding or a special occasion on one of the seaside resorts - the place would be like Christmas, Bayram and the sounds of the old days when there was war put together!

Fireworks cannot be bought by the general public they are only used by licensed people.

Ok well thanks for the comments... Have to agree with rachelw... its IS fun!! shame that there won't be anything happening. I might just set my BBQ on fire (on my terrace.. don't panic people) with a baby Guy Fawkes and just shout bang a lot to resemble fireworks!

Great fireworks and bonfire at Ayias Nkolaos military base, just over Famagusta crossing, free entry and stalls with food etc. Display starts 7.30. Also at Dekelia base, dont know what time here, think it,s earlier.

I thought I read somewhere that fireworks are illegal (except under proper control), and maybe bonfires are too! That's why some folk are going to The Weakest Links - fireworks of a different kind. But all the tickets are sold now according to Tricia Dann the organiser.

bigOz, the locals haven't caught onto the fire risk of those chinese floating lanterns obviously. Each one with a tea candle in, just takes a gust of wind to take one into some dry brushland, whumph, big fire.
