Flying out tomorrow. Last time out I came home to a £92 phone bill and this time intend to use Skype. Is NC classed as Cyprus or Turkey in it's tariff when calling non Skype mobiles and landlines in UK. My Mum is unwell and expect to be calling back a lot. Mike.

You are charged the rate for the Country that you are calling TO. Rate for calling TO UK is 1.4p per minute to landlines, 14p per minute to most mobiles. It doesn't matter where you are calling FROM.

I tested a Skype phone (wireless connected to an Apple Airport = router, so I don't need to switch on my computer) this week. Test calls to Holland and the UK (Skype to Skype) gave excellent results, I was told: "clear as a bell!". Before I buy Skype credit also: did anyone out there call a landline or mobile phone in TRNC or abroad via Skype and if so: what is your verdict on the quality?

Friends in the UK often call my landline in the TRNC using Skype, if I don't happen to have my computer switched on, and if it's only going to be a short call, we talk like that. Usually a good clear call, just occasionally there is a problem, but disconnecting and re-calling usually solves it - as with most computer problems!

Call quality on SKYPE depends - mostly - on the quality of one's connection to the ISP... if the Cyprus end has little / low available *UP* speed - a common problem - the person t'other end will receive your conversation in a broken up form .. SKYPE is a form of voice over Internet Protocol...( voIP) and the most common reason for a poor experience is poor connection at one end. When in the UK, if you are with '3' - you can make / receive Skype calls on your mobile for FREE !! ( even on a pay as you go) ..worth remembering if on infrequent visits !

Thoroughly recommend Skype for TRNC to UK - I 'book' a weekly call to my brother in UK to catch up on weekly news (and boast about the weather here!!). Via computer, of course, Skype is FREE. Have even tried the video call gig - very slight delay in transmission/reception, so this doesn't work too well - I have 1024 connection from Nethouse, but maybe you would need a faster speed for video calls.

Hi, please can you confirm whether the quality calls are also with video. I have been trying ti use Skypoe video calling for the past few weeks and both the picture and the sound keep freezing and it is virtually impossible to hold a conversation. I am wondering whether it is because I am running it in Windows 7. I have also noticed that it is eating up my 4 gb allowance rapidly. Any advice?

treemancyprus re msg 13 As with the audio.. whether video works (or not!) is more a feature of your UP speed.. normally LOUSY (it seems) :( I'm guessing most folk can see the UK, but the problems start when they try to allow the UK to see them ? ...

Hi, 6m Don't actually have a webcam here, so my only experience of Skype video call was when my brother called me using his webcam. (i.e. I could see him, but not vice versa) - definate delay between speaking/hearing, so we disconnected, then re-dialled using audio only. Perfect reception/transmission.

I have been testing an ip phone for the last few months here for a UK company (without the use of a computer), it is a normal walk around house phone that anyone, anywhere in the world can call me on when ever they want and vice versa. It works brilliantly from and to ADSL lines and the wireless systems. I am currently testing a Turkcell 3 g dongle with router. Based on a fair usage policy it will cost around £15 per month to land lines, extra charges for mobiles. The advantage for people calling me is that it is free or very low cost depending on the phone package they have in the UK or elsewhere. (i.e. alot of people have free evening and weekend calls to land lines). Is anyone using a similar set up here?

Technophobe so can't discuss computers at all, but we have a web cam connection when we speak to daughter in New Zealand and although the picture quality is not perfect it is certainly adequate

| M5col re msg 17 Folks moving out to Cyprus can start off a Vonage service ( from £5.99/ month) - transfer their UK fixed line to Vonage, plug the Vonage adapter into a 3 G dongle router and hey presto they continue to make / receive calls using their UK tel number for NOTHING... up to an hour free... Works with any DECT cordless phone - or fixed phone.. and when back in the UK - it can be set to divert to any UK fixed line number for FREE.. ( or you can take the Vonage adapter back home - works with any router.. ) The BEST bit? .. You can try it and if you don't like it you get a FULL refund - less any call charges.. there shouldn't BE any - if you just call 01 / 02 / 03 / freephone numbers in the UK They even offer you two months free - if you like the service and stay three months.. I've used it for biz for three and a half years - I'm on a package that calls 45 countries for free - and no 1 hour limit - and SWEAR by it.. voicemail ( Free) Diversion (Free)

message 20 This is a similar system with 40 + free countries, calls to the US are free to Land lines and mobiles. All UK land line calls are free. They can also issue you with a UK (also other countries as well) number of your choice as they did in my case as I do not have a UK land line these days. It is quite handy as well, as you can take the phone anywhere and just plug it into any broadband as I did fairly recently at a friends house in Lapta who has wireless broadband, my daughter just so happened to call me from the UK at the same time - my friend was amazed. As with all these systems including Skype when you start calling overseas mobiles it can really rack up the charges. Many thanks for your input.

message 17: I use, in TRNC, a Dualphone 3088, purchased from Amazon. I can use Skype without having my computer on and can also use it as a regular landline phone - when you make a call, you choose between the two services. It has a range of around 300 metres apparently. It has a base station which is plugged into my router and phone line. Quality of calls has been excellent on it so far. The basic model of this phone is around 40 pounds although mine was just under 70 as I need the Mac compatible version. Highly recommended.

RE msg 23, nostradamus: Thank you (and others of course) for your reply. As I need the Mac compatible version also I wonder if the phone was sent to you in TRNC, UK or RoC. Did it cost you much extra? P.S. At the moment I use an American Edge-corE wifi Skype phone (wireless to my AirPort) and I'm very satisfied with the quality also. However, the range is much less than your 300 metres! P.S. I maintain a small database of Mac users in TRNC (just to help each other with advise etc) - would you like to join the free "TRNCMUG" (TRNC Mac Users Group)? If so, please mail me your name and mobile phone number/landline and I'll add you to the list. I keep your details confidential.

Remember if you have a 3 mobile in the UK, you can be logged into SKYPE and you can call to / receive calls from friends on SKYPE - for NOUGHT .. even on a pay as you go sim - as long as you have any credit left ! |

Back to basics!! I have a NOKIA SIROCCO Mobile and a computer connected wirefree to the internet. I would like to make regular phone calls to UK mobiles and landlines preferably via my mobile but could accept the limitation of having to be at my computer. Could someone explain what I need to do/buy/rent/subscribe to set myself up on Skype? I am going to pay my internet provider on Monday and will ask the same question but I would like to be able to know what he is talking about!!!

Message 24: I purchased my phone whilst in UK a while ago. I'm pretty sure that Amazon won't supply this kind of thing to us here but not sure about RoC, you would have to check their website. Will contact you direct with my details for the Mac user group.
