People doing their shopping in the South has always been a loss to TRNC businesses. What will the opening of Lidl mean? Will even more people (who don't usually) shop in the South?

I don't know for the first part and I can only speak for myself in the second part and I would say I doubt if I will.

I don't shop in the south at all, and as for Lidl never used it in the UK so doubt very much if I will here.

I do shop in the south for certain things and will go and check out the new Lidl, been this week and a couple of price comparisons

Normal lettuce this side 2TL south 29 Cents

Pedigree dog food this side 3TL south 1.16 euro

Nescafe original this side 300g 29TL south 400g 10 euro

Clothes are much more expensive over the South compared with UK prices and so are cosmetics, i got a new mascara in Superdrug price £7.99 same one over south was 15 euro.

I do try and shop here but some things just make it worth going south for and even taking into account the insurance cost jsut getting my dog food over there i am still saving.

Lidl is a budget retailer and has existed in the UK for many years. During that period, the mainstream supermarkets have prospered and have increased their market share, number of stores, profits, etc. You can argue that in the UK, the budget retailers such as Lidl / Aldi / Netto have made no difference at all.

What has happened in the UK however, the large supermarkets noticed that cost conscious shoppers may visit these budget retailers, so they too introduced ""Budget & No Frills" brands. So if you don't want to buy Heinz Beans in Sainsburys or Tesco, you don't have to go to Lidl to buy Lidl beans for 20p. You can get Sainsbury's Basics or Tesco Value for the same price or even cheaper!

Maybe the supermarkets in Cyprus will do the same? Introduce budget varieties to compete. There is a similar chain to Lidl in Turkey called "BIM". No frills, cheaper products, smaller stores. Maybe they will open in the North too?

Hi, does it have a butchers?

Does it sell mens clothes?

Could you give directions from the Metehan border crossing - if you could include Carrefore (spelling??) and Marks I would be obliged. I have driven to Larnaca a couple of times so I am vaguely familiar with the ring road.

Lidl in the UK was always good for your basic foodstuffs, cleaning materials and the like, if you wanted anything a bit fancier it was time to visit Tesco, Asda etc. Will have a look in there next time we go South though.

They are all over Spain and Portugal, there seems to be a bit of snobbery where these places are concerned. Its different because the products are mostly German etc, but the fruit and veg comes also from UK. In our local Aldi and Lidl which both have had refits their fruit and veg is far superior to that of our local Sainsburys and Asda. To me its not about the price its about having something different. The only thing that lets them down is the way they operate staffing, they employ less to do more, although they are paid a lot more hourly. They only have 1 or 2 checkouts open and its a race to get your things packed or slung in the trolley to have to pack again. In Spain this year we did not have any of that as they can afford to pay more staff because wages are lower. We did all our shopping there for the week and had some great wines also.

What is a value spud or carrot for that matter??? A spud is a spud and so on. I enjoy shopping on the South, the meat is far superior for one, the choice is greater. Anyway is an easy run where we can combine the supermarket and all the other malls.

Directions for Carrefore and M&S.

From Metahan down to traffic lights turn right at big roundabout (olympic circles) turn left. At the first traffic lights -turn right. Right at next lights, right again and big car park for Carrefore/Home Base. Closest Carrefore to the border.

M&S as for Larnaca airport and not sure if you know Ophanedies (on right going down to the roundabout - Larnaca airport) at those lights turn left keep on through (2/3) lights M&S on opposite side of lights l/hand side. At those lights turn left then first right and immediately right again with a pay car park on the left or use M&S free.

City Mall/IKEA/Carrefore - at big r/bout takes you to airport go straight turn left and next r/bout go past hospital on right and at next r/bout go left parking for all Mall is on the left.

Hope this helps.

I personally think Lidl is crap, bottom of the scale as far as supermarkets are concerned. I would certainaly not make a trip to the South to go to a Lidl.

There is obviously a market for cheap crap in the South..

I will continue as a vast number of TC's do to shop in the South when I wish to.

I will not continue to support some profiteering businesses here, who shop in the South and then add a hefty margin on and recycle it here.

As regards Lidl if it fulfills my needs for some items I will use it.

The insurance you pay to visit the south can be easily recouped in just one or two visits.

Pork 6 TL south 17 tl North

Beef mince 10 tl South 17 upwards here.

Lamb between 12 and 16 TL south here and arm and a leg.

I will not wear sack cloth and ashes and deprive myself of these bargains until the locals and restaurants do likewise, and then i wont anyway.

Re: Msg 21,

Well done, Hippo.

Re:Msg20,

C**p is what they sell in Lemar et al. : frosen and 1000 times defrosted £1 packets of junk from Island which they sell for £7 and which even my cat wouldn't touch, let alone the rest of my family.

As for me, I'd rather join Hippo and go to Lidl and buy Parma ham, Serrano ham, Milano salami, Bratwurst, herring and salmon, wonderful yoghurts , French, Italian , Dutch and German cheeses, great Italian, Spanish and French wines , excellent fresh veg ( including artichokes and asparagus), dark fairtrade chocolate, pralinen, genuine marzipan chocolates etc.etc.etc. - and all for the fraction of the price and better quality than in M&S.

They will be located in Pallouriotissa and Lakatamia in the Nicosia district, Larnaca, Aradippou, Kokkinotrimithia, Limassol and Paralimni. Got to be good for consumers to have a choice. Maybe the 2 people who would not cross the road to go to Lidl have money to throw away on expensive ordinary food, I just won't ordinary food at a competitive price to lower my shopping bill

Without firms like Lidl, other supermarkets could charge what they want.

Re : Msg 30,

Well, you just did.

Re : Msg 32,

"Without firms like Lidl, other supermarkets could charge what they want."

Quite.

Lidl has already caused some stir in the South: 5 or 6 families that control the market there are very unhappy about it and try to do everything to boycott Lidl:

e.g. Lidl has to sell a certain percentage of local produce, so on the 11th hour all local supply contracts have been mysteriously cancelled and so it goes on...

But this supermarket mafia is for a shock: they've been controlling prices successfully for many years. But now ROC is in the EU, EU competition law is applicable. So they'd better consign to the past their dirty tricks of squeezing out all the competitors.

Why should Lidl have to sell a certain amount of local products? Surely in the EU this would be a restrictive practice?

islandgirl ;

Have you been shopping lately?

Do you know the buying price for any of the stuff they are selling?

Are you aware that a new super market "ERÜLKÜ's" just before the Ercan junction is selling the same pruduce a lot cheaper than Lemar, Starling, or Tempo!

You want more details, I suggest you offer to sell something to Lemar or Starling and see what I am talking about.

By the way; they are not exactly very good payers either - they sell for cash but it can take months for some of them to pay up!

In theory a bottom of the scale supermarket opening up in the south should not mean anything to supermarkets in the north of the island.

Imported goods to a non EU part of the world will always be much more expensive than the prices we are used to paying but in saying this I have personally seen a substantial price decrease in many of the supermarkets NC over the passed year.

It is now much more reasonable than a few years ago & even imported stock is coming down to a more reasonable leval of price aswell as more special offers on selected products.

islandgirl,

It has something to do with giving a fair chance to the local farmers, growers and food producers, and the drive to supply as much as possible fresh food which doesn't have to travel thousands of miles to our plate.

Clarissa I am not being argumentative here, I was under the impression that under the EU things were not restricted like that, you surprise me.

What ever hopefully it will shake a few things up down there I find the supermarket staff misserable and disinterested.

You are not looking in the right places mmmmmm,

As the grand opening ceremony of seven Lidl stores island-wide approaches this Thursday, it’s hardly surprising that competitors are scrambling to secure their share of the market, beefing up their own advertising campaigns which are jammed packed with all sorts of special offers.

I seriously can't believe some of the stuff I've read here.

For those who are against shopping in the south, stay off this thread...simple as

For as long as things are cheaper in the South and the borders are open, people will shop in the South...

Once Lemar etc become more competitive I'm sure this will change.

I can understand the issue with import duty, however what the hell has import duty got to do with vegetables grown in North Cyprus, some of them behind the store selling them to you.

Examples:

Corriander 50krush (SOUTH) 2TL (LEMAR)

Lettace 50kr (South) God knows....

Parsley 50kr (South)....?

When onions and potatoes hit ridiculas prices here the were less then a quarter of the price in the south.

Meat, mch cheaper in the South.

Irrespective of where you live, North or South, if I found the the other side to be cheaper, I'd shop there. Going a couple of times a month with a full shopping list pays for the insur and petrol.

Doesnt mean I hate livng in NC

This is a small island, only small minded people would stay in their own little bit. Grow up people. If you don't want to shop in LiDL, then don't....Just stop bleating at those with more sense than money!

I fully intend to give LiDL the once over!

Re message 40, Erulku were selling a bag of cashew nuts for over 4tl cheaper, cat food is a few kourus cheaper and 4 bars of olive oil soap over 2tl cheaper than in Starling.(Just a few examples). I also found the checkout staff friendlier & more ready with a smile than the miserable lot in Lemar. Erulku cater for the local market, not the expat & tourist mark

My sister who is an avid Waitrose & M&S shopper goes to Lidl's once a month & has told me some of their wines & cold meats are of a superior quality & a lot cheaper.

This thread is not about shopping in the south.

The title of the thread is... "what will the opening of Lidl mean to stores in North Cyprus" and the answer is not a lot. Unless there is somekind of active Lidl fanclub in their thousands, then it will not change much as far as supermarkets here are concerned. Although it may change for some supermarket chains in the south for reasons that are obvious.

Most of you are already shopping in the south so what difference would a few Lidls make ??

I would still argue that NC is becoming just as competetive as the south in comparison to a few years back,(infact there is a vast number of products that are actually cheaper here) taking into account insurance, petrol and maybe a snack while your in the south a monthly trip is likely to cost 70-80tl.

Any loyalty I felt towards shopping in the North went out the window the day they auctioned K5.

Frankly, I will buy here if it is cheaper but will have no conscience whatsoever about saving money.

I will eat in the south when there and find the food as good and often cheaper in the south.

Certain brands of cigarettes are now marginally cheaper in the south as is petrol. I worked hard

for my money and I will choose where I spend it.

I respect the opinions of those who feel that dont want to, but please dont try to tell others what to do.

Indeed the thread is not about shopping in the North however like all threads has been highjacked and turned into such a thread, hence my reply.

Now in rsponse to your statement

"I would still argue that NC is becoming just as competetive "

A typical trip to the south, cost:

Insurance 50tl (for the Month)

Petrol 20tl

shopping

5 kg Beef @4 tl kg = 20tl

5kg lamb @ 12tl kg = 60tl

5kg mince @ 5tl kg-= 25tl

total 175tl

Here

5 kg beef 100tl

5kg mince about 100tl

5kg lamb 150tl

total 350tl

....and insurance still left over for 29 more days!

I am aware that meat is cheaper in the south, but was not aware that you could bring meat or dairy products from the south over to the north...

As message 52 qoutes "i worked hard for my money and will choose how to spend it" I cannot diagree with that but there seems to be a general feeling of dislike towards all things in NC, totally negative in many respects and complaining about almost anything.

So I sometimes wonder what some people are actually doing here ??

well,well,well...I remember being ridiculed on here by certain members because I shopped in Lidl and Aldi. They both have their good and bad points..e.g.Lidle is excellent for vegetables, wine, beers and detergentsetc..They have a fair selection of fresh meats and cheeses.Their brands of cereals are as good as the brand names you pay twice as much for,but Aldi has a better range of breads pastries, clothes cheeses, pet foods.I use both stores here in UK and I save on average £25 a week on my shopping. They are not every bodies cup of tea,but as one person has said they have made the big four take notice....

Now to really put the cat amongst the pigeons, how about the extortionate prices of home made pies and patisseries at the so called 'boot fairs'

And how about some other stalls that sell cheap Chinese power tools and goods.

Lots of these are recycled from the south.

Its not only the supermarkets and restaurateurs profiteering from their own people.

And before anybody asks for proof, I have seen one vendor buying meat in large quantities in Orphan Annie's so the excuse that the raw materials here are 'so expensive' doesn't wash.

I'm sure your memory is correct, but I am confused as to what that has to do with me owning a Jap motor and a TV bolted together in Slovenia?

Back home we now have a Lidl's in our small town and am glad of it as it has many good offers

including energy saving light bulbs 50p each or 3 for 30p! (honestly) We are bringing them to our

village in Turtle Bay to save energy/expense on the site and pool lighting.

I also get cat food there which is cheaper and my fussy Persian likes it. Good for many things and

they include Scottish products as well as their German goods - far too many Stollens last year!

Hi All good morning

I haven't read all of the postings but I think no one has picked up the most important thing with this story.

It is an initiative that can only help in the process of finding a solution to the Cyprus problem.

The more GC companies trade and enjoy turnover from TC the more chance there will be of achieving a solution to the political problem.

Message 83 I love the stollen, too, but not so many people know what it is, and they had hundreds left over last year and selling it off very cheaply - so I froze some! Good sized healthy yoghurts too. The Lidl's near

my in-laws in Germany sell other things too, and they also sell Greek things in all of them.

Owing to the power being off, the Flange and me braved Nicosia to go Lidl.

Directions are

After crossing border turn left and follow your nose past |Ledra palace and carry on keeping the walls of the town on your left after you come to the last corner (there are some large trees in front of you turn right and go 2.5km till you come to a roundabout tuern right and follow your nose to you see some small signs indicating the way to Lidl.

it was absolutely mobbed at least an hour and half wait.

They have many bargains some English products Typhoo tea i noticed corduroys chocolate, lots of bickeys and unbelievable range of wines starting at 1.5 euroes.

We will go back hopefully next week after the novelty has warn off

I shopped in Lidl and Aldi's about 2 years ago when the recession hit and i find them brilliant. Some of the comments are true regarding staffing as the staff on the checkouts are timed and when there is no-one at the check-outs they leave them and work on the shop floor - which is why they are always stocked up. As soon as someone goes to the checkout they leave the floor and serve them - the same thing happened to me here today in TRNC - cost effective management which is why they can keep their prices down.

I have shopped in Lidl's in Spain and Portugal and found the same excellent service. Their food is very good quality and good value for money. I also judge by what the kids prefer - when I have fruit shoots in the fridge beside Aldi's fruit shots drinks - they both pick up the Aldi one and leave the others. I have even been asked for if there was any of the Aldi's shots in as they could not find them - the fruit shoots were in the fridge. So it is clear what they think

One of the English newspapers today had a 2 page spread on how to save money on food. They compared well known brands with supermarket ones which were a lot cheaper. In a large proportion of the comparisons Aldi was the best on price and taste.

I know from my own experience in the Uk they also sell very good fruit and veg at an extremely competitive price.

I try to shop in the North but some things are just a better quality in the South eg fish and meat.

A word of warning to all who shop on the south side....my friend regularly shops for pork in the south, she had all 25kilos confiscated and dumped at the border by the TC border police only 8 days ago.She has shopped for pork for over 4 yrs now and this is the first time she has ever had meat confiscated. It was an expensive lesson but we have always known that certain things are not allowed thru the border....my friend has always thought she would get away with it--oh dear!

There are at least 2 new Lidl stores in Nicosia district. One is as Hippo has described, on the Eastern side of Nicosia close to the green line, but there is another south of the ring road before you get to Orphanides & probably south of the roundabout where Metro store is situated, judging by the google map for districts of Nicosia. There also seems to be a third opening in Nicosia, but I haven't checked out the map yet. Even in Greek, I can worked out where the stores are by checking out the main roads. It really isn't that difficult if you put the Greek location names into google earth, as I did.

I'd say not bad for 4 years....if she adds on all the meat she;s bought and the money saved, even after one bad run she'd still be quids in.

I knw for a fact similar rules apply to the UK. A good friend bought some mangoes back frm Mexico and they were confiscated by the airpost authorities and he was informed he can't bring any food products into the UK frm outside the EEC

Found another branch of Lidl today, still very very busy and have to say i was not that impressed, never used Lidl in the UK only because there was not one near where i lived. Anyway head towards jumbo at the next roundabout instead of going straigh across as if going to orphanides take the third exit past the metro supermarket. Follow that road until you come to the church on your right and then turn right, you cant miss it.

Same here Teresa, I went over yesterday and went to the one that Hippo gave very good directions to (thanks Hippo)....wasnt impressed, it was full of the sort of stuff that you buy because its cheap but dont really want or need and then find it wasnt really that cheap after all! It was packed, and I must be honest that eventually we dumped our quarter full trolley and left the store, as couldnt be bothered to wait another half an hour at the checkout, after already waiting ages!

Keep going until you reach the last corner of the Ledra wall on your left hand side, turn right at that corner at the traffic lights. Keep going until you reach a roundabout, turn right and then follow the small signs for Lidl.

I think that the one that Teresa went to is easier to find, head to orphanides, and at the roundabout just past Jumbo, turn right and its along on the left somewhere.

Something of interest for all Lidl fans possibly? In today's Mail on Sunday, there's an article stating that Lidl will be selling Reindeer meat in the run-up to Christmas.

Not sure whether they will be selling this in all their branches worldwide though

teresa. they were stopping every car yesterday, I think they will all bayram week. We fell upon Lidl on monday, didnt go looking for it but just saw it and curiosity got thebetter of me. The cleaning products are certainly cheaper. I paid 1 euro 49 for 30 dishwasher tablets here 15 cost me between 9 and 11 lira. 6 x 2 litres of sparkling water 1 euro 69. 2 ltrs bleach so cheap. Saw plenty cheap wines but did not know the labels so didn't buy.soft drinks, fresh veg's particularly avocados were very good. I did not see one other British person there all seemed to be GCs. The check out girl was so very helpful. I can see the attraction. Jeannie not a lot of imported products a lot of local products so would be interested to see Reindeer Meat x
