Looking at the pictures from Haiti over last week re colera outbreak - there does not seem any difference to the way these poor people are living i.e. 2 weeks after the earthquake. I would have thought with the billions that was sent there some sort of shelter and sewage system could have been provided. I could not see any proper tents unless they are there and camera did not zoom in to them. I should like to think that the money sent was properly used - or am I being nieave.

Im not giving to any more charties that help disasters. Look at Pakistan did all the aid get to them. No 1 has said the correct thing, like everywhere the rich get rich the poor can die x |

I learnt my lesson after giving generously to the Tsunami disaster appeal only to learn how little got to the survivors. Is it any wonder that good people have decided against making such donations?

My families aid to Africa was to take a lot more clothing than necessary on holiday there and distribute it ourselves to those who were obviously in need. On each visit we saw free welfare aid packs being sold in Market places in Nairobi with armed thugs standing guard over their ill gotten stocks.

You know i must be so blinkered, i give to all releif funds. Reading what you say Im shocked. I take my hat off to the Italians. When they had the earthquake, Berlusconi said we do not need outside help. In no time a tented village was built and a school and church. A community was made. They set about building new homes for all the victims and acheived it. In very little time. All within their own country x

I spent 3 x years in Haiti heading a security operation for a mobile network. The place is a poverty stricken with hardly any infrastructure. The people are friendly and somehow happy and very religious. 90% Christian - 10% Voodoo. The country is run by a small group of very rich families who profit from the poor. They control the food prices and the government (for what it's worth). The slum areas are controlled by gangsters (chimer) and are no-go areas for the police. Much as I would like to help the people, and I have in the past, the money goes straight into the pockets of corrupt politicians and local businessmen never to be seen again. The place was bad enough before the quake so God knows how they will improve the situation now. Unless you are giving directly to an individual do not expect your cash to go far for the purpose you expected.

I wrote a song inspired by John Lennon shortly after his death called "Never too much love" verse one ! "Bombs all over the place, Politicians getting fatter, We should help them, they say, but they dont really matter ! people in cardboard cities dying of the fright, we should help them they say ! Why cant the world unite?" not much has changed all these years later ! poor people, regards Barry

Personally, I would never donate a single kuruş to any of these international relief efforts. Having checked out the appallingly low percentage of donations that actually benefit the victims directly, as opposed to purchasing trucks and land rovers and setting up local 'relief co-ordination centres', I would never donate. Every developed country has foreign aid budgets, already paid for by our taxes, so let them get their acts together and start spending the aid money they already have in the bank, rather than trying to appeal to people to donate their hard-earned (and taxed) cash. Oh, yes, and then there is the local corruption and theft (for re-sale) that is endemic on mainland Africa. Governments insist on 'co-ordinating' distribution of foreign aid, i.e. taking over the distribution. Result = without money, influence or connections, you won't get it. A bit like a local (non-recognised) 'state' - nepotism, favouritism, and it's not what you know, but WHO you know.
