Halloween is very commercial here in Bavaria as well Paul. I can't recall trick or treat from my childhood, but my American partner can remember her parents allowing her to visit a limited number of houses as a child. I have always thought that it came across the Atlantic from the USA.

Latest research shows that men do not become grumpy because they are old. They were probably grumpy when they were younger as well.

The original idea was from Ireland, but instead of pumpkins they used turnips. However when they emigrated to the US pumpkins were in abundance, hence we now use pumpkins. It was a celtic pagen ritual "All Hallows Eve" when they celebrated the stockpile of food they had for winter. Trick or treat started in the USA in 1911.
