Surely they could declare the 80% interest per quarter charged on the mortgage to be usury and thus illegal!

O you who believe, you shall not take usury, compounded over and over. Observe God, that you may succeed. (Al-'Imran 3:130) Turkish Cypriots may be moderate Muslims, but surely an appeal based on the Koran must gain attention.

The Government deficit has nothing to do with what is inhuman treatment of these people. What is happening is either morally right or morally wrong, even before you begin to look at the criminally extortionate interest rate. Government ministers have a foot in this bank otherwise they would act, this latest decision seems to be straight out of the Gary Robb guide to fair business ethics. The Turkish Government must be looking at this fiasco and looking at these ministers and cringing, no wonder their purse is closing fast.

Inhuman is correct, they have no ethics, no morals, no respect for human life, how low can a Government get! how low can a Country get! I hope "Homes from Hell" are reading this thread, despicable, the only other words I can think of would get me banned! Some victims have been to Hell and back, and still they sit in their ivory towers and do nothing! A Banana Republic is to to good a sentence for any of them!

Did people really expect any form of support from the TRNC Government? Have they not had more than enough time to make positive changes and respond to peoples demands for legal safeguards to be implemented? Did they ever take any form of constructive action to support those conned out of their homes from Gary Robb? What have they ever done to make people think they are a proactive caring Government that acts when fraud and corruption is so evident? Was their Property Complaints Office Effective? What exactly have they ever achieved? In my opinion the TRNC Government is part of the problem. Why the HBPG and others continue to put faith in "working alongside" Government officials is beyond me. When the Golden Goose has laid all its eggs, (when the housing market is on its knees) will be the day they actually admit, reform and intervention is necessary. Until then they will continue to feed from the trough.

mess 3 Muslims are not permitted to borrow where interest is payable that is haram itself, therefore Muslims tend to go to a muslim bank where a mortgage is calculated without interest, so really Vaughn,it.s the other faiths that are being ripped off,as for the muslims well they should have known better!!

I agree with Bradus on this one although I think the housing market is already on its knees. Unfortunately the trough is fed from many sources and still contains enough to feed from.

The more I read what these clowns have said the more I despair. They have no clue to what they are talking about. The interest rates depends on many factors like: a) Interest given to deposits b) Compulsory fixed percentage deposited with the central bank with zero interest c) Rate of bad debts d) Length of time it takes to recover debts through the system i.e. courts and the auction through the Land Registry Office. Thus the government can do a lot to improve the above conditions and help bring down the interest rates but what they have to do urgently is to limit the total interest accrued e.g. the ratio of maximum interest to original debt not to be more than say 2. I do know that they cannot legistlate retrospectively but a) they should not waste another day to do it now and b) twist the arms of the banks to reach a workable settlement for the past problems. ismet

Thanks for the links Yorgozlu, Its good to hear that the EU are looking into the many property scams in Europe and Turkey and its being forced due to public demand to act and investigate. When the Irish MP was discussing property fraud in Turkey, why did I get the impression they really meant TRNC?

Bradus; I am glad you had noticed that, however failed to notice one another important part that it is an 'Irish MP' doing the discussing property fraud in TURKEY (wink) being the MOST important part. wink Why did he feel the need to mention Turkey when it is about TRNC? I hope to live long enough to find few people that knows where I'm coming from. So far........no such luck.

msg. 23 Yorgozlu, I did explain the matter before previously somewhere on C44 but can't be bothered to find it. In a nutshell: 1. In the past the parliament authorized the Council of Minister to limit the maximum ratio of interest divided by the original debt. 2. The coucil of Ministers in their infinite wisdom passed on this authority to the Central bank. 3. the central bank limited the ratio for TL to 4, later made it 8, then 10. For foreign money this ratio was 1, then 2. 4. somebody took the matter to the constitutional court arguing that the ratio of 10 was exorbitant. The constitutional court ruled that the council of Ministers could transfer their authority to the central bank providing they put an upper limit on the ratio which they failed to do. Thus they considered the transfer of authority unconstitutional. The net effect of this decision was the exact opposite of what they wanted. To this day the government has not acted. The High Court Judges that I spoke too are all in despair. ismet

yorgozlu (mess 31) What blatant ugly racism! I now know where you are coming from, so will keep far away from you in the future! Groucho ( mess 34) Whether blackpoolfan is Jewish or not really doesn't matter! what matters is the utter raciest element of yorgozlu's post! I am not in the least raciest, but without a doubt the TRNC Government is not worth anyone world wide taking a risk for, anyone thinking for purchasing anything in the TRNC, all I can say is THINK, THINK and for God's sake THINK again!

Groucho Message 34, cok cok ayip (Shame on you) I will stick to the "cok" bit myself as that is what the man is, appart from being an out and out racist, out of order and no need for the racial insults. Hopefully that will be the end of it as he has developed a trend in that he will spout his crap and insult the British buyer's and label us all greedy fool's and then when it comes on top he does a vanishing trick only to pop up on another thread. I am all for healthy and light hearted banter and discussion but with this guy its "My way" or the "Highway" So the crux is this Mr Yorgozlu i for one am getting bored of your rants and i am sure i am not on my own, but i will of course stop short of throwing racial insults at you, after all that would be childish, and offensive don't you think????

msg 33; Why do you take being Jewish as an insult? "you are Jewish and love bacon butty" is how you've described yourself on this very forum not long ago. As far as the 'sh*te' is concerned,if you cant take it,dont give it either. anyone wants to trace the thread,it is about 'eating pork'...........I cant be bothered with the person. But certainly not going to let him get away with INSULTING my country. If you dont like my country,f**k o*f back to where you came from,is what springs to my mind that I was often reminded of whilst in UK........

All very interesting but spare a thought for the poor folks at K5, trembling at every car in the street, opening the door to the bailiff accompanied by a LAPTA POLICEMAN to ensure the summons is served. These are real people who have committed no crime being treated like criminals, the stress is KILLING them. Here's another thought, how did GIRNE police get Pauline's phone number if not from Lapta Police who had it because of the complaint she made about KURSAT TRYING TO RUN CHRIS OVER. They didn't use it to tell her the outcome of their investigations, but strangely GIRNE police used it to summons her in on the day they confiscated her computer (which they still have). Guess who showed up in the room she was in that afternoon - you got it - the Commander from Lapta Police. Where's the air freshener. That will teach her not to waste the police's time.!!!!!!!! Before you say TURKCELL, the phone she uses was not bought in her name.

Why can't they confiscate everything the builders have - that would stop the scams. Our builder Cafer Yucelgazi has left people in Karsiyaka with unfinished houses for over 5 years via Ca Sa - he too has mortgaged land there and has left the people in Karsiyaka in a mess with no building permit, no electric, no roads, sub-standard properties. He started building my house nearly 5 years ago and in 2008 he walked away from it, put all his assets into other names so that he cannot be touched and he now has a business in Nicolsia building properties and is now a REGISTERED builder (which he was not 5 years ago when he did this). When I asked how he got registration at a HBPG meeting I was told that no-one had made a complaint against him?????????? Any builder who puts his buyers in this position should have their assets (in what-ever names they are in ie wifes, sons etc) confiscated - the government could sell them and pay off the mortgages and keep the rest to improve standards
