I am fortunate to be holidaying in Cyprus for a month in the new year (January / February), Do you think it possible to take a few days out of the Southern holiday to visit old stomping grounds in the North. Haven't been to Kyrenia since 1961. Didn't want the hassel of driving over, would prefer public transport. Hope this is the right forum for this sort of question. Any help would be much appreciated.

Dear Jenny, You should have no problems as long as you have an EU passport. Cross over at the traditional Ledra Palace Gate. None the less if you have a rental car in the south (with permission to use it in the North) you could get insurance (only third party) and cross a number of times, see far more and save accomodation costs. If you want accomodation etc at IAH we might be able to help (being a tour op. / travel agent) or you can try many of the places other board members will suggest. info@flightholiday.co.uk

You could cross at the Ledra Street crossing in the middle of Nicosia's shopping area, spend time exploring the old town sites (Buyuk Han etc) then either take a dolmus or cab into Kyrenia. The dolmus costs about 5.50TL, not sure about a cab but maybe 20TL.

Your help has been invaluable, thank you. Dolmas sounds great, can I get one from near Attaturk Square?

To get to the dolmus office, walk down from the Saray Hotel towards Kyrenia Gate and there is a turning on the right which has a sign for parking and also Kombos which runs the dolmus taxis. The office is up the road a couple of hundred metres on the left.

Dear mmmmm I'm expecting changes, and memories to come flooding back. Newman's Farm for example, where we could have boil eggs, bread and butter and cups of proper tea, in lovely old fashioned surrounding. With cows (Jersey's I think) out in the yard. Very special experience especially when feeling a bit home sick. - Honest I didn't dream it. Jenny

If you walk into central Girne, you will find a lot of small hotels, both on the main and side roads, with very low rates at that time of the year. By the way, If you walk north along the main road from Atatürk square, all the way to the end (250 metres or so) to "Girne Kapısı" (Kyrenia gate) - there are frequent minibus services to Girne, charging around 4.5 TL. The bus stop is on the main road, in front of the park (on the right hand side of Atatürk's statue). The minibuses have placards at the front stating where they go to...

It certainly is warmer than u.k in Jan/Feb but you may get rain at times. Have found it pleasant and warm during the day, summer clothes even, and cool at night. Nothing compared to what we get back home! Hope are lucky.

How about Nostalgia Hotel which is in the back streets behind the harbour near to the mosque. Very traditional and a good location although you will be woken up early by the call to prayer. http://www.nostalgia-boutiquehotel.com/

jenjon (msge.13) Newman's Farm! Had quite forgotten the place. Another 'old timer' like ourselves, with memories of the island in the good old days. When we revisited Kyrenia for the first time in oodles of years we choked up. The harbour and castle remain intact and still as gorgeous as ever, together with the wonderful Kyrenia range as a backdrop. Its all VERY different now of course - some good some less so, but they call that 'progress' so who are we to grumble ? Nothing ever stays the same after all..... Jan/Feb not the fun months though but hope your trip is good anyway.
