To some this will be a red rag to a bull and understandably so... I quote Tatar (Turkish Cyprus Finance Minister) as reported in the Hureyet.. Tatar said the region’s revenue comes mainly from tourism, trade and education. “Our main future is in tourism, which is waiting for investments,” he said. “We aim to promote Turkish Cyprus as a new destination. One can find quality villas for sale for $120,000.” http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/n.php?n=turkish-cyprus-aims-to-attract-investment-from-turkey-2010-11-04 Your thoughts please?

why should this surprise anyone? the territory is subject to a pointless but costly partial blockade, while turkey is developing fast ...and the other islanders are unwilling to compromise: (cristofias "explained" why on local tv this year) therefore from one point of view, you could call it call it the lesser of two evils if you prefer just the same it may be a little while before estate agents print sales leaflets in persian, russian and arabic

Just back from trip via Istanbul and shopping with old friend. The place is booming and people seem to have plenty of money to spend in the splendid new shopping malls.

If insidious annexation, does that mean Turkey and the annex will never be part of the EU?

I hope Tatar is sending someone from Turkey to take over the tourist industry in the TRNC to expand it. If he wishes it to be the new tourist destination he needs to clean the whole of the north up. Beaches & countryside alike, because the government at present do not have a clue. The butlers wife

The title of this thread is provocative, not the content of the article. The TRNC has to attract investment. Surely TC's would welcome investment from educated and wealthy Turks? It's the uneducated and poor that raise their ire? Turkey is close and it is cheap to get from Istanbul and Ankara to NC. It is not subject to the trade restrictions that have been imposed on the TRNC, making it difficult for other nationals to invest. I am not sure what other options the TRNC has.

msge 7 "If he wishes it to be the new tourist destination he needs to clean the whole of the north up" there is an awful lot the TRNC can and should do to help itself.

ps a friend's sister bought a place in Turkey. It cost about the same as a property in NC. My friend has stayed at his sisters resort and in NC. He said to me 'why would anyone buy in NC when Turkey is more beautiful and does not have the land issues'. Fair comment

Is the TRNC being sold to Turkey? I was told my title was provocative and the article was not. This on one level is true and I am guilty as charged but for the sake of open discussion you could take the article further and going one way it could mean this. If large scale investment came here from Turkey, these investors would want to make sure that that their investment was safe. They I would image be looking to the Turkish Government to make sure there was always a future for Turkish Investment in the TRNC. This may mean that any settlement, EU membership for the TRNC, direct trade is at odds with the Turkish investors. Then what the TRNC has is another player at the already crowded negotiating table. For example I can’t imagine all the money going into the Cratos was on a whim but on a sound political and economic footing. I am sure there are many other scenarios good, bad, indifferent and ridicules. Thanks for your thoughts it’s good to talk.

Why do they feel the need to bring over their workers as well when TRNC is alredy swamped by Turkish mainland 'workers' whom are mostly illegal??Not to mention the unemployed TRNC citizens!! |

msge 11 Yes you are right. Turkish investors would need assurances from the Turkish government that it would be safe to invest. Has the TRNC government previously actively touted for Turkish investment? Is this a new development? Is this the current Turkish government simply trying to befriend Turkey or has a deal been struck? Do both governments know that their will not be a Cyprus solution? Yes it is good to talk

How would they set the price? based on previous claims? Would they put the funds in to a pot to pay the GC's? Would the unused land then be sold to financial institutions to sell back to TC's and Turks wanting to invest etc in the form of loans and mortgages? What means to the GC government have to stop this? I assume they would? How would this all work? Am I way off track with my thinking? Quite probably I suspect?
