Almost every village in TRNC (Northern Cyprus) has a Byzantine, Lusignan, Venetian or Turkish history. If you want to know more about your village let me know here and I'll answer questions or give some detailed information.

I would be interested in any village history on the Karpaz.

But if that is a big task then Yeni Erenkoy / Sipahi if possible please.

Thanks in anticipation

You may have more success searching under the Greek names:

Lapitos, (Lapta), Vasileia (Baspinar) ( Paleosofos (Malatya), Motides (Alsancak), Agios Amvrosios

( Esentepe),Agios Epiktios (Catalkoy), Trikomo (Iskele)

you appear to have forgotten that many of these villages have had a strong Hellenic influence through many of there differing periods...

Mark, I think you will find that Motides is now İncesu and Alsancak was Karavas, not Motides (Alsancak) as you state

RE msg 13, 6xm: (...) You may have more success searching under the Greek names: (...)

=> Mark, don't give us your usual b*ll again, please. I'm fully aware of the fact that village names in the Greek language were often used until the TRNC Government provided us all, people in the North (TRNC) and acknowledging the TRNC, with town and village names in Turkish. You still don't get the reality, eh..?

RE msg 15, 6xm: (...) you appear to have forgotten that many of these villages have had a strong Hellenic influence through many of there differing periods...(...)

=> No, I have not forgotten, Mark. I even know which towns/villages were influenced by OTHER (mainland) colonisers than the Hellenic ones, including all Levantine countries around the island of Cyprus.

P.S. Mark, if you have nothing to ask in this thread, please concentrate on telling your RoC (Rest of Cyprus) friends to study their own history instead of parroting nonsense or telling historical lies. Thank you.

Msg 19, continued.

6xm wrote: (...) you appear to have forgotten that many of these villages have had a strong Hellenic influence through many of there differing periods... (...)

=> Mark, you seem to have forgotten that it is "their differing periods" and not "there differing periods". I bet other British people will agree. Or is it different in Northern Ireland (Ulster)?

RE msg 23, gotavilla: Ah, Arapköy (or Klepíni or Arab Keuy or...). With a mixed population of Moslims and Christians (Greek Orthodox) in circa 1880 - and only 18 houses, mainly made with mud bricks. And a small church, of course! A footpath would lead to Ayios Epiktítos (or Chatal Keuy, now Çatalköy) and another one to Ayios Amvrósios (now: Esentepe).

I'll make a list of villages suggested by C44 readers (btw: enough suggestions for the time being!) and write about the villages as soon as possible.

RE msg 33, Navek: There are several sites giving Turkish/Greek names. But there are always two problems. 1: The Turkish names lack the typical Turkish letters ( ç ı ğ ö ş ü ), which imo is unacceptable. The only solution is to put the right names (spelling) on a web graphic (.jpg or .gif). I have done that and will upload a map shortly. 2 : The spelling of names in Greek is even more complicated - there are several ways to translate the Greek characters into our Latin way of spelling the Greek (Cypriot) names!

Info about villages: I've written down all names mentioned above and as soon as I'm ready with my current "Map of Salamis" project I'll make a special section on one of my websites with a page for every village. So text, pictures, maps and other graphics can be added/altered when necessary. This cannot be done on this text board, but I'll announce it here when a village page is ready.
