(Local farmer) shouts back " Aye Drink up my good man its pure highland water....... |

Sorry, all you porridge-eating, bagpipe-blowing, haggis-hunting Scots - try 'Googling up' a few photo images of South Island, New Zealand - then you'll see 'scenery'!

And you couldn't leave there quick enough for this "pseudo desert", says it all really. A place is a lot more than a few hills with clouds over them!

yenibob/msg 10: 'A place is a lot more than a few hills with clouds over them!' That's right, 'yenibob' - especially when those clouds cloud the lawlessness and skulduggery that goes on here!

Makes your reasoning to come here even more inexplicable. NZ must be bloody awful! Is it true that Parliament gets heated over Hobbits (and Sheep)?

Yenobob, Do you have to be so rude, our reasons for coming here are our business and was only after a lot of research. I still say Scotland is one of the most beautiful places for scenery. Tenaktou from the photos my cousin sends I would say that NZ was very similar and I believe lots of Scots there as well. Chris

I do not believe I was being rude Chris, just expressing an opinion. Or is that only allowed if it agrees with yours? You should have said I have been to Scotland many many times (for work) Cold, Wet, unfriendly people, awful food with poor infrastructure and orrid midges. None of the above is rude, nor is it fact, but it IS MY opinion. PS, how did they get on in the Rugby yesterday?

South Island NZ is fabulous. Our daughter;s house overlooks Otago Bay.Spent 2 weeks travelling round the South Island and I have never before seen such stunning scenery !! Spent lots of school hols at Grandparent's house in Scottish border region, pretty but incomparable with NZ

yenibob. message 15 Cant imagine why they were unfriendly to you. Was it perhaps your arrogance and rudeness, as depicted in this thread ,in asking people to explain their reasons for moving or leaving certain countries. Where did you do business in Scotland that was full of midges,do you know where midges are to be found? Ask for Scottish food, the bulk of it is the same as English food, your comment about porridge is a stupid as me making the same comment about jellied eels. Scotland has many faults, but most strangers recognise the friendliness encountered ,especially in the cities. As someone who has worked in London, dont even talk to me about friendliness.Ask a local in Glasgow or Edinburgh and quite a few other European cities, for directions and they will likely show you. Do the same in London and they will look at you as if you were a piece of crap on their shoes, for daring to interrupt their oh so important lives,or are a vagrant, crook or after something.

Girne, I think you must be getting "confused" I quite like porridge. Why are you getting angry? I posted opinion. You don't have to like it (or know who posted what).

harita - yes, I seem to remember being taught that (and the sheep!) My Kiwi friend said the South Island was more like Scotland. She also had to go abroad to get better paid work, as many of us do, and I met her teaching in the Gulf. Of Swedish descent, she got on well with us when she came here, and I also went with her to Egypt and Israel as well as Spain. We know N.Zealand is beautiful, but there were some things she didn't like about it, but that was her opinion. Worst midges I experienced were in Istanbul, but I did seem to get immune after 2 years. And I wasn't working in the countryside either!
