Because of Nationwide now charging for TL withdrawals from ATMs I was wondering which ATMs nearest to Alsancak are dispensed sterling. I know they'll empty quickly because of Bayram but it would be useful to know anyway.

The only ones that I know that dispense sterling are the HSBC - main branch and the ATM by Dome Hotel, and TEB Bank (all branches)

I did hear that the new one (can't recall name but is green and begins with P) at Bektas dispensed sterling but couldn't get it to work for me. If one or two can, why don't all banks? Perhaps we should be suggesting it to our banks. I will make a start by putting a post on 44 for the attention of Creditwestrep.

malsancak. I think the Nationwide charges apply to all transactions in foreign countries not just cash which has an additional charge of £1 per drawing.

This probably also applies whatever the currency drawn, including sterling. So no benefit there. Please correct me if this is wrong.

Nationwide will only charge for drawing foreign currency, if you draw sterling there is no charge.

mess 7

perhaps you could at the same time ask the main banks in the UK to dispense pakistani and Indian currency as there are many of them residing in the UK

LOL

Hi Lazy days - might do so if I was Indian or Pakistani and lived in UK.

Lapta6,

Sorry to say but Nationwide now charge for all withdrawals from ATM's that are not in UK. We thought that we had it cracked by only withdrawing Sterling but not so - the charges still apply! Wish they did not but there is no way around the charges now.

'Nationwide will only charge for drawing foreign currency, if you draw sterling there is no charge.'

Then what do you do with 'sterling' out here? You use it to pay at supermarkets/restaurants etc at what exchange rate?

You need to do your sums.

There is a 3% charge for withdrawing TL but only 1% for £, I believe. You then convert the £ to TL at an exchange shop. BUT I'm going to use a Halifax Clarity Card instead, no charges apart from 15%pa for any balance.

I can confirm that if you withdraw Sterling here with your Nationwide Debit card (linked to your Flex Account), there is no charge. We have checked our account - there is NO charge.

Checked ours too used it during our 5 week stay no charges, also used our Nationwide credit card to pay our Hotel bill in sterling and again no charges, we paid it in full on our return to UK.

Waddo, I would suggest you contact Nationwide if you have been charge for withdrawing sterling from an ATM on a Flexaccount. You may want to refer to this letter I received on 31/12/2010.

Today I received a phone call and this message (edited to fit in the message box and remove non specific information)

'As I understand matters, you have used an ATM in Northern Cyprus in the past to withdraw sterling and want to know what charges if any you will face. I am pleased to be able to confirm that the new FlexAccount policy change relating to cash withdrawals overseas does not affect the withdrawal of sterling from ATMs overseas. You will continue to be able to withdraw sterling from ATMs overseas free of charge. I would like to offer my sincerest apologies for the confusion you experienced surrounding this issue as a result of correspondence with Nationwide.'

Toonie. You must have a cash card account and not a flex account, the cash card accounts have charges. We used HSBC and TEB ATM's for sterling and then changed to TL at the exchange office opposite Lemar.

Toonie. Don't know why 1% as the charges are 2% of the transaction amount plus £1 for each withdrawal these are the charges for currencies other than sterling, so why 1% perhaps you should be asking Nationwide. Where did you withdraw your sterling from the bank or ATM.
