Re. Msg 3: You are SO right, 'racoonchic' - this is 'Young EOKA' - E.L.A.M is only the trendy new title for these young barstewards. When I lived in Paphos, I was one of their victims; and in other totally unrelated incidents, so were my neighbours' teenage children. We had one thing in common: we were minding our own business. All this 'Young EOKA' activity is not just a case of: 'If you can't pull "pussy", have a punch-up!' - this is the very Cypriot xenophobia being expressed that they have had drummed into them from the cradle/church/school.

Mark - I really wonder why I wrote supporting your re-instatement. If you lived here and heard the stories from friends (both British and Turkish Cypriot) of what is so often happening on the other side (not every story is published on here), then you would not embarrass yourself by keep defending the indefensible. Oh silly me - those of you who are always right are not capable of embarassment. Who cares whether it is EOKA, EOKA Pops or whoever - IT HAPPENS - and most of it is racist, although obviously not this incident. However, as EOKA killed more GCs than British it doesn't invalidate racoonchic's comment. Having said that, I am partly at fault myself because I will not cross over the border to gain personal experience - having seen what heppened to my friends' car I will not take the risk. But then I would rather heed the words of Tenakoutou who now lives here after living in the South than somebody so closed to reality.

The sad part of all this is that when GC come across here there cars never get trashed, maybe if a few started to ,the word would spread, not that im saying this is what should happen,in all honesty ive never had 1 tiny bit of trouble over the south side, even staying in nicosia many a weekend last year and visiting some of the bars and disco,s in nicosia center,i stopped going when vodkaredbull price increased to 15 euros. Best to get yourself a set of english number plates and when you cross, just before where it is your going to shop, blue tac them over your TC number plate, then park your car on the car park. i know we should not have to do it,but its cheaper than a new paint job on a set of tyres!

I lived in the South for 2 and a half years and cross over there regularly. In all this time I have never experienced any problems and have never tried to hide the fact that I live in NC. On the contrary, most of the GC's that I have spoken to have expressed an interest in what is happening in the North, how people are getting on and how the region is developing. It is worth remembering that there are 'thugs' in all walks of life and on every continent and the fact that they exist in the RoC should come as no surprise to anyone. As always, the majority should not be tarred by the actions of the minority. Paul

Paphos has a shocking reputation for attacks by GC's on tourists. Having said that, probably 99% happen late at night in 'Bar Street'.

Dear JJ re msg 10 I would have hoped you 'campaigned' for my return because you won't hear BS.. As you've said yourself, you aren't crossing over and I'm not suggesting for a minute that some folks haven't had unpleasant experiences. I CAN say that in all my times driving a 'rump' RoC plated car in the north or being in a 'TRNC' reg'd one in the south - ( folk visiting me) I've never experienced any 'issues' - other than one TC lad in north Nicosia making a negative gesture- when we were stuck in traffic.. we simply smiled back and said " Merhaba" ( the window was open) and his mates cuffed him over the head for being impolite and they are smiled back..;) THOUSANDS of TCs and expats ( 'northies' ) cross over every month to shop, visit, fly via LCA / PFO without incident.. EVERY country has it's fair share of intolerant idiots and all I asked was how it was possible to deuce it was some sort of EOKA based movement that was responsible for these attacks..

Tenakoutou re msg 14 You would also agree that many UK based service personnel have been involved in fights - resulting in places such as Ayia Napa being off limits.. Certainly, wifey felt safe enough anywhere in Cyprus..

Quite right, '6m's' - Paphos became 'off-limits' for squaddies in about 1986 - probably other resorts were banned to them around the same time. I remember it was all happening around the time of the 'Arab bashing' episodes of that era, which you might remember.
