mmmmmmmm, Registration at FT.com is free. This letter from the US ambassador of the time quite clearly accuses Greece of blackmailing the EU over Cyprus' acession, something you and I are both well aware of.

Hi 'TRNC' Thanks for your info and I am now registered for free stuff ! Greece' stance on RoC membership has never been an issue of dispute.. Many folk would say that this 'leverage' given to the 'rump' RoC neatly counters TR's overwhelming military force that meant political solutions were at a standstill...

mmmmmmm, "Many folk would say that this 'leverage' given to the 'rump' RoC neatly counters TR's overwhelming military force that meant political solutions were at a standstill..." Quite agree, but that was something for GR and RoC to seek, but not for EU to give. EU truly had its pants pulled down there, they know it, and shouldn't blame RoC for using it as a trump card.

Hi 'TRNC'Vaughan Don't forget that the Greeks *Want* TR in the EU.. if only to prevent them being the 'eastern' frontier They also wanted the 'rump' RoC to agree to Annan and have washed their hands of the CY prob.. I'm quite sure the EU felt that they could find some sort of compromise. Turkey has played RIGHT into the hands of it's dissenters by signing the Ankara Protocol and then breaking the rules.. The 'rump' RoC don't need to play the Veto card.... Turkey's actions have allowed FR, NL, A, D to question her 'seriousness' as she is abusing the rules BEFORE joining..
