TURKISH authorities rejected an application by a Turkish citizen to marry his Turkish Cypriot girlfriend, saying Ankara did not recognise the Republic of Cyprus, Turkish press has reported. According to Aksam newspaper, the woman in question is Günsel Cemal, a Turkish Cypriot who left the occupied areas after the 1974 invasion to live in the Cyprus Republic. After working as a translator for the Interior Ministry, Cemal relocated to London, England, where she wrote and published poems. http://www.cyprus-mail.com/cyprus/turkey-refuses-marriage-licence-turkish-cypriot-woman/20101118 in this day and age do ethnic origins mean anything , will they burn poppies at their wedding

Paul the former.. 'Funny' how they managed to 'recognise' Cyprus and fly the flag for the Eurovision song contest in 2004 in Istanbul - Turkey even gave a vote for the song of a nation it didn't recognise ;) Cyprus ( RoC) voted for a TR song for the second time in two years... oh those 'heady days'

Marky, Logic does not always work in Turkey. I can use my ID card to travel between TRNC and Turkey but if I want to travel to another country from there, I must enter Turkey with a valid passport. In my case that means my British passport and pay the £10 visa. A few years back, the day before I went to Moscow this rule kicked in and I almost missed my plane. We had to make a few phone calls in high places in Turkey and eventually allowed to travel on. When we returned home we read in the papers of a few families who missed their holidays. ismet

İsmet; I always travel to Turkey using my ROC passport from Ercan, if transiting Istanbul. But if I have to stay there a few days, I use my TRNC passport to İstanbul, and the same when going through police control before departure to UK. I only use my ROC passport in UK where no one queries why there is no exit stamp (since hardly anyone stamps entry/exits in EU passports!). The police contol usually and as far as I know, does not ask to see your tickets. The only place where the ticket/passport combination may be queried is the check-in desk because of the fines imposed on airlines due to travellers to Europe without visas. At the check-in desk in Ercan and İstanbul, I show my EU (ROC) passport and all is fine. The same happens on the way back; I use my EU passport to exit UK and my TRNC passport to enter/exit Turkey + to enter Cyprus. My dad always said, "it's not what you've got, it's how you use it that is important"!

Marky, Let me see, I think it was 2008. We flew from Istanbul to Moscow, then by river to St. Petersburg and from there to Istanbul by air. Big Oz: the general rule in İstanbul is that you must enter and leave by the same documents. In any case, they should check to see if you have a valid visa in it if you show them the TRNC passport when leaving. In older days I would enter Istanbul with TRNC ID card, then when leaving for Germany or UK I would show them my ID card plus my British Passport for proof as to how ı would enter those countries. So one day you may have a shock if they tell you that you have to leave with the same document and no visa no travel. ismet
