Why is it that a taxi to Ercan costs 25stg when the journey takes only 20-30mins from Catalkoy and a taxi to Larnaca costs 50stg 2 hour journey!

Can anyone recommend a taxi that doesnt charge over the odds for such a short trip, as previously stated I live in Catalkoy.

Thanks

Steve - thank you very much and the same good wishes to you and yours.

We are off to Australia on Christmas Eve to visit our son, so I doubt 2011 will be prosperous - not initially at least

In reality out of the 25 pounds how much is left when you take into consideration, initial costs of purchasing the vehicle, fuel costs, insurance, (hopefully public liability) road tax, vehicle licensing, general wear and tear of Vehicle before you even get to the driver and maybe owner. Now do that with the 50 pounds realistically nothing is left and small jobs like from Alagadi to Girne boaster the coffers for example, 35 tl is within most people’s budget so you can charge it for what seems a small trip. Taxi driving done legally is one of the most hardest trades to make a living, competition, vehicle repairs, licensing, customers not keeping you on time, traffic and then having to explain why it is so expensive. Taxis are not like running your own car! And if four people are in the car what a cheap journey!

Also and I do not approve but understand when a taxi is racing passed you at night driven by what you can only describe as a maniac; consider WHY

Would you pay 25 pounds Girne to Catalkoy at midnight NO therefore to earn a living the driver has to do at least five people to make this money if he charges a lower price.

Therefore taxi prices have always got to be within people's budgets not necessarily what the job entails.

So when you add it all up £25 is really quite cheap then.

Suggest the drivers are doing themselves short, and an increase to £30 or £35 is more realistic.

Also as we live in the TRNC we should be dealing in the local currency so let call it a round 100TL plus 15% tip.

anyone know what the per km rate is used for taxi meters? Haven't used one for a long time but when I did the 3km night time journey was quite reasonable.

Thanks Stevie D, I will give them a call.

SND1966 if they are undercharging for the Ercan route then the people travelling to Larnaca are getting a substantial discount, so why not charge more to Larnaca? My point was that if it costs 25 pounds to Ercan then it should be 75 pounds to Larnaca, and yes why are the fares in pounds sterling, all prices should be quoted in Turkish Lira. I would love to get my head round how they cost the journeys because at the moment it just looks as though someone has pulled a figure from the air and everyone else has copied, or the other assumption I have come to is that they are s**t at maths.

I'm certainly no mathmatician, but back in 1997 they were charging between £20-£25 then. So does it have something to do with the fluctuation of the TL over the years and they are still making money out of £25 despite how high/low the TL gets. Just a thought.

Message 13 As I said Taxi prices have always got to be within people's budgets not necessarily what the job entails. Obviously people will pay 25 pounds but all grumble if Larnaca goes over 50.

In the uk we use to specialise in long distance as we both had other jobs, to run from Exeter to Bristol 60 pounds about two and half hours and 125 miles round trip but Exeter to Heathrow was 95 but it took us six hours and about a 360 mile round trip. People would pay both prices but go over the hundred for Heathrow other ways to get there came into play. Realistically though it was our driver who did the short journeys on the meter gained the most profit but had to deal with many people. Yes agree it should be in Lira but most people want to pay in sterling. I remember friends paying 50 pounds but when we rang they should of given 50 lira

The last time I made enquiries for a taxi to Ercan from Girne (back in May) I was quoted 70 - 75 lira by 3 different drivers, when I arrived here in 2004 the cost was 50 lira so dont think the cost is too bad taking into consideration inflation all round.

To the best of my knowledge I believe that information regarding the buses that service Ercan airport can be got where the kombus leaves in town.
