While walking my dog in Karsiyaka yesterday, he came running back with a snake in his mouth. Fortunately it was dead (and appeared to have been for a while), but does anyone know if these are dangerous? It was small, probably only a foot long and a sandy/brown colour with markings. Also, if I or my dog were bitten (he is only a small terrier), does anyone know the timescales involved for getting to the hospital / vets and so on? I have been told that the black ones are not poisonous?

we had a thread on snakes some months back , it was very informative well worth reading it , but i believe the black ones { king whips } are encouraged in gardens to keep the vermin down { they give them milk } but the people with real knowledge are orange kazzie and boredhouswife

good luck , simbas

Thanks Simbas, I will do a search and see what I can find out. I don't think I'm brave enough to encourage any in to the garden though!

the black snakes are not poisonous but i think the brown ones are.... i wouldnt hang about anyhow !!

they are still quite fast at the moment and will slow down when it starts to get cool.

i still find it amusng that as a dog owner myself we always ask about how long our dogs will have untill we can get them to the vet, or because they are small can they survive etc

we never seem to worrry about ourselves getting bit !!

i dont know much on the subject but friends tell me you can buy an anti venom vaccine from the vet and store in the fridge or maye a cooler bag on walks ??

i think the smaller the animal or person the quicker the effects take over our bodies u r probably best to google snakes of cyprus to see the types and what to do if u got bitten.

talk to a vet yourself and get info first hand.

pertv at hospPETal and sibell in chatalkoy are very good vets in my experience.

hope this helps

i dont like the thought of snakes in my garden either of any kind so we feed a few ferrell cats - this is meant to deter snakes as the cat kill them. so we all do each other a service !

Sandy / Brown colour could be the coin snake (which is not poisonous) or it could be a Cat Snake or even a young viper - both of which are not so much fun !!
