Interesting, because under UK law, if you remove the snow, and a place it irresponsibly, and someone falls on it, they can sue you. A similar thing has happened in the past where people have cleared their paths, it has iced over and a person has slipped on it. I wonder whet they will do with all the cars in traffic jams when it's snowing and the snow settles on the roof of the car.

Snow on the roof is, in fact, quite dangerous. It's not the snow that's currently falling and blows off as you drive along, it's the snow that falls over a period of time (perhaps overnight) and hardens. You come out in the morning, see it, and think how firm it is. What then happens is you drive off and put your heater on full tilt. This warms both you and the roof of your car, which in turn thaws a thin layer of the snow/ice, allowing it to slide off and hit whatever is behind you.

That is very true. They mentioned it in the news for the last couple of days. It is a hazard to other car drivers and yourself as it can either slid down onto your windscreen and impair your vision or fly and hit somebody else car either impairing their vision or worse still damaging their car. So just think of it as a courtesy to other road users Care to detract your comments. Or maybe not @apc2010 @Quarmby

yenibob I fear you are one of the "PC" brigade? Perhaps we should ban all wildlife from being near roads just in case they inadvertently stray onto the roads and we might unfortunately kill them and damage your precious vehicle Should we also ban vehicles driving in the rain in case they spay water on to your car and it goes on your windscreen and impairs your vision momentarily, I could go on. I live in the real world!

yenibob when you start calling people by silly childish names, I fear you have somewhat lost the argument. End of discussion with you. ps I have driven for 46 years and up to now never been in any accidents,so your last comment somewhat contemptible.

The conditions in London at the moment are exactly what could cause the problem. Snow overnight freezing on the roof, with a light covering this morning. When the ice comes off the roof, it comes in one large slab. An you're correct. There isn't an actual offence "Failing to remove snow", but a couple that would cover it would be Driving without due care and Attention, or Driving without consideration for other road users. The highway code says # you MUST be able to see, so clear all snow and ice from all your windows # you MUST ensure that lights are clean and number plates are clearly visible and legible # make sure the mirrors are clear and the windows are demisted thoroughly # remove all snow that might fall off into the path of other road users >>>>More

<<<< The rule is clarified in the introduction:- Many of the rules in the Code are legal requirements, and if you disobey these rules you are committing a criminal offence. You may be fined, given penalty points on your licence or be disqualified from driving. In the most serious cases you may be sent to prison. Such rules are identified by the use of the words ‘MUST/MUST NOT’ Although failure to comply with the other rules of the Code will not, in itself, cause a person to be prosecuted, The Highway Code may be used in evidence in any court proceedings under the Traffic Acts (see 'The road user and the law') to establish liability. This includes rules which use advisory wording such as ‘should/should not’ or ‘do/do not’.

Apologies Quarmby if you think I was calling you childish names, of course I wasn't. I was quoting from the dictionary. Numpty....One who believes windscreen wipers will remove 2 cubic meters of snow which has been suddenly deposited on to a vehicle windscreen, usually during braking. Plural...A Thicket of Numpties or Motorway Pile up. As it's pantomime season I will take your joke about 46 years with no accidents in the correct spirit.

The Road Traffic Act further clarifies this by stating:- "Careless, and inconsiderate, driving. If a person drives a mechanically propelled vehicle on a road or other public place without due care and attention, or without reasonable consideration for other persons using the road or place, he is guilty of an offence.” In other words, If you don't clear frozen snow from your roof and it slides off, causing problems for other users, or in such a way that it blocks your vision, you're guilty of an offence.

It's a pity the Police dont stop people with bald tyres and lights that don't work - they must cause more accident than a bit of snow on the roof.

Before moving here I lived in Aberdeenshire and before that Midlothian. Where police have been stopping cars with a lot of snow on their roof for years. Reason 1.. It's illegal. 2.. It's downright dangerous.

I find that if you live in a road which is long enough the snow will come off the back and not over the windscreen once you reach approx 90 mph dependant on wind speeds and direction. A few 180 degree, hand brake spins en route should ensure that the snow is deposited in your neighbours front gardens and not on the footpaths where it could be a danger to pedestrians. If you try this in Germany you must pay attention to all your mirrors as your German neighbours are likely to be trying an overtaking manouvre as you reach 90 mph
