Hi we have a little kitten Emily-Tiger she is neutered and is about 18 months old now, all summer she is happy playing out all of the time, but come the evenings she would stay in with the rest of the pets, I have never agreed on letting my pets out all night, Well now the weather has turned cold we would like her in more, during the storms and at night, but she is crying constantly, making a hell of a din and going to all the doors and windows, Any ideas on whats up with her, Mr Spider thinks its a phantom pregnancy, or that she has found herself a baby kitten, and keeps it outside not sure if I agree with that ? But we need all the help you can give please as I do not want to leave her out in these very bad storm all night and day !

Thanks, Spider,X

Have to agree with mess 2 and three. We have two cats, and they demand to go out every night, rain or snow.Cats are natural hunters, that like to forage and socilaise or fight over territory with others of the same species.Let the guy go spider,

Paul.

Spider - I have got two cats and even in the freezing cold temperatures we have had here recently they both wanted to go out at night. They like to go hunting at night and it's just what they like to do. Don't worry about your cat - it's natural for her to want to go out.

Yes but she has always liked being curled up beside our two dogs on the sofa every night...and thats where I like to see her all safe and warm. there must be a reason that she no longer wants to come into the warm ! and she loves to sit on Vics lap all evening with our old cat too, She comes in runs to the food eats as fast as she can and wants straight back out the window, and if we shut it behind her quick she starts her howling screeching meowing..I dont want her out in the thunder and lightening, Its safe and snug in doors :(

I would say, let her out if that is what she wants, but consider puting a nice cosy and waterproof box/kennel somewhere sheltered for her in case she wants it, then you will have some piece of mind knowing she has somewhere to go in the night if she gets cold/wet

I agree with message 10...cats have their own mind, and nothing you can do will change it. As she is neutered, i very much doubt she has found a tom or another kitten, but chances are she is out hunting...think yourself lucky...no mice for you!!

Get a cat flap installed .... we have.

Your dogs will only let your own cats in and out.

We have cats that sleep by the stove allday then go out at night, a cat is a very efficient hunter killer.

When our cat was younger she wanted to be out at night whatever the weather, even sitting on the garden fence in the pouring rain, simply because she loved hunting! We used to leave a window open upstairs so she could come & go as she pleased, she invented her own system for getting up & down. I don't think you can go against a cats natural instincts, she'll make you suffer if you don't give in!

When a cat is neutered, the next strongest urge takes over and that is hunting. It is quite normal and you should not try and restrain her. Get a cat flap as msg 12 suggests.

I'm going to throw something different in. Does she have a litter tray in the house? Mine tend to do that when they want to go to the toilet. They are quite happy to pee in the litter tray, but prefer outdoors for more than that. When I don't let them out, they will go and use the litter tray and smell the house out. Rather that though, than worrying about them outsde in the dark. I lock the cat flap up at night, and also put a large chunk of wood over it so they know it won't work.

Thought I would let all who are interested know that tonight she has crept up onto our bed where she gets the heat from the electric blanket, we never let the cats on the bed but I would rather she say in for the evening up on the bed than stay out in the cold.. The strange thing is, its as soon as she comes in she wants straight back out if she knows the window and doors are shut, as she is use to them all being open all the time, Its not that she is wanting the toilet etc as its as soon as she gets in, like she is being claustrophobic sounds silly I know ) Like I said she is always in of a night but just of late she has changed ! I hope she reverts back because she makes the strangest noises I have ever heard from a cat ) and she will not stop till the window is open and she runs straight back out again ! I have always had cats but this is very odd behaviour, she is where I like her to be tonight indoors, so be it on the bed, and she will be off it later when i get in it )

I think all of the above is sound advice. If she is repeatedly in and out and makes such a noisy fuss you may wish to satisfy yourself that she is managing her toilets OK as cats are susceptible to urinary infections etc. Though she does not like it you may wish to keep her indoors for 2 or 3 consecutive days and monitor her activity in a litter tray to ensure that stools are normal and passing urine is neither irregular, nor excessive, and colour and smell normal. If you then allow her unimpeded access, as the weather becomes colder, the amount of time that she remains indoors should increase particularly if she is welcome on your bed. Also try and establish if you have one particular stray cat keep coming into your garden as this can unsettle her and make her restless. She can hear things which you cannot hear. Hope all well soon.
