Under new legislation only a TRNC citizen with a degree can be employed in a position that requires a degree as a prerequisite, any foriegner with the same or better qualifications will not be able to apply for the position posted! This may cause controversey stated the Minister for Labour. I don't think so, all employees will be more than happy to employ a student who on graduation joined the army for two years national service and gained vast experience in his field of study.

Surely for industrialists in the TRNC to grow and compete with other EU member states the new law is the only way forward.

They struggle to find a Cypriot happy to work a forty to 50 hours a week in a restaurant, hotel or othe tourist related industry.

There is such importance on TRNC citizens to get a job within the civil service, sit behind a desk with a pen and have the self gratification that they are an important part of society.

The TRNC's economy has seen a slump since Turkey decided to stop giving pocket money, if the TRNC wants to be part of the EU they have to prove they can run the country without handouts, they will never succeed when you have

1/3 of the population working as civil servants

1/3 of the country retired civil servants

1/3 of the country paying for the above

So many policemen, so many pen pushers, so many teachers and no substance.

If the present government expects to survive be employing votes they will be in for a shock.

I agree. And add to that the fact that much of the brightest talent emigrated for a better life years ago leaving a lot of dead wood. The north should launch a massive "homecoming" initiative (like Scotland is doing) to encourage highly qualified TCs to return, repopulate and rebuild the country. But it's just too bloody obvious to become reality.

Doesn't say much for TC confidence in a settlement, either.

If the TRNC joins the EU as a full member, such discrimination will be illegal.
