President Dervis Eroglu has said that it is essential to develop the tourism sector in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Mr. Eroglu was speaking during a visit paid to him today by representatives from the tourism sector.

During the visit, President Eroglu underlined the importance of tourism in the country and said the tourism sector, along with other sectors should be given more emphasis and priority.

Noting that tourism contributed greatly to the country’s economy, Mr Eroglu said that the government had an obligation and responsibility to improve the tourism sector.

We have to improve the sector. I hope the embargoes imposed on the TRNC will also be removed and that transportation will no longer pose a problem for the tourism sector’ Mr. Eroglu added.

Also speaking during the visit, the President of the Cyprus Turkish Hoteliers Union Mehmet Dolmaci stated that the only way out for island country economies was tourism.

Explaining that they are continuing to take on initiatives towards raising public consciousness and motivate politicians, Mr Dolmaci said that it is important to make the tourism as a state policy.

He also expressed the view that developing the tourism industry will contribute to efforts aimed at reaching a solution to the Cyprus Problem.

How many years have they been saying this? The place is still a rubbish dump. Mr President you need real action, not hollow rhetoric.

Re. Msg 3: Ah, but 'Quarmby', there's going to be 700,000 Turkish tourists - that should swell the coffers of the casinos and the 'nightclubs' - and, hence, the 'Rich Club' - who cares about a handful of EU tourists???!!!

'700,000' must be the magic figure that dreams are made of!

And what's a few trails and mounds of rubbish and builders' rubble between 'friends'?

Neither 'friend' seems to have noticed it at all up to now!

Actions speak much louder than words. However, I wouldn't bet a single kurus on any of the rhetoric coming to fruition.

Just my opinion of course.

Mr President you need to open your eyes trnc is a toiltall round many historical places , rubish is strew by the side of most roads and picknickers leave their rubbish at picknic sites and beaches.

Tourists are hounded in the Girne harbour area.

SMELL the coffee trnc is a dump with a big opinion of it's own self importance.

The Ministry of Tourism needs to appoint a "tourism task force" who look, listen and act on the constructive criticism that has been passed on to them for the last two or three decades, yet still the "tourism environment" of the TRNC still makes it one of the most unwelcome tourist attractions in Europe and the Middle East.

First and foremost is an education programme aimed at all citizens explaining that their input is of the greatest value in protecting and promoting the island as a tourism destination and more importantly the benefits that will come from:

a) disposing of litter in the correct manner, b) refraining from owning dogs that persistently bark all night, c) refrain from using the cars horn in residential areas where babies may be asleep, d) not using scooters on paths and pedestrian thouroughfares, e) not parking on pavements........ the list goes on as for the municipalities the new paths are fantastic but why stick a tree in the middle every ten metres?

Metres?

Tourists do use prams!!!

The annual Cyprus Today headline on beach entrance charges (Yawn) surely that could/should have been sorted, The dolmus service is very poor, no time table and restrictions on journeys i.e an elderly couple staying at Pia Bella wanting to go to Kervansary have to walk to the bellapais traffic lights and wait for a dolmus then get crushed as the driver illegally crams more passengers than allowed, breath the drivers second hand smoke and then enjoy a journey that stops, starts goes in reverse.... then have to be dropped off at the StoneGrill and walk down to the beach!!! That my friends is not a good service or advertisment for the tourism sector. One of the big factors with a tourism task force is the force itself, you would need to vet every application and find out what their perception was of a good holiday expectation, what their values are, have they every been abroad other than Turkey do they know what tourist expect?

Yes, EU money was used to renew the road and pavements in the one way system in Kyrenia. What happened? The 4x4 brigade started using the new pavements as their parking spaces, couldn't walk a couple of hundred yards to the shops/offices could they. The police never booked them, wonder why?

Aslan,

Good point. The EU and USAid rolls in and great public works are achieved. Our area has been transformed with canalisation for sewage pipes and new pavements. Why are these works so successful? Because like every other decent job in Cyprus they are overseen by suitably qualified overseas personnel and not useless locals!

Grants from the EU?! The new underground sewage system in Girne was paid for by the EU but to connect to it, now forcibly, 1150TL per apartment for the privilege and 600TL per apartment for connecting labour charges! So much for overseas aid! A nice little earner for the Mayor, at least it'll pay for his Christmas bash for his sycophantic expat followers and his New Year brand new Mercedes!

I recently saw a huge air pollution monitor situated near the fountain roundabout in Girne paid for by an EU grant. Whatever the results show do you really think any notice or action be taken?! (rhetorical)

Best you all leave then if it is so bad, one could take apart point by point some of what is said above but just in some cases,

Why slag off an air pollution monitor? the results will be noted there are groups in TRNC that do this.

Blame the mayor for connection charges to the mains drainage? and accuse him of corruption? that does not seem fair without evidence proving it.

Cars are booked for parking on pavements in the town, if you watch you can see this happening.

Dolmus service is poor? what do you want door to door? then get a taxi!

Using car horns in areas babies may be asleep in?? really this is ridiculous.

Positive comments to problems are much better that just moaning, if you do not like it there are other places to go.

Pugwash

you are missing the point. I don't know if you were there when this work was completed, the area looked really nice. My point was the blatant ignorant disregard these particular, obviously "important" individuals showed scant regard for what was being done for the town from the EU. they just put 2 fingers up. They were totally ignorant to the danger and inconvenience they showed to the pedestrians. Your weak pathetic argument that one should leave if you don't like it,is quite laughable. HISS springs to mind.

The area still looks nice and people are being booked for parking on the pavements etc, go and look you can see the police in action.

Brinsley you will never be clever enough, your posts prove it ;)

My argument about leaving is that if you dislike the place so much as some posters seem to you are free to leave. If not at least be positive, as to your point as I say TC's in particular are being booked daily in Girne.

Pugwash

First and foremost regardless of where I live I am entitled to an opinion on what I perceive to be faults within the TRNC tourism sector, my comments like so many others are constructive and give ministers the oppportunity to see or hear what the tourist/expat feels could be done to make the TRNC a premier tourism destination. Your posts suggest that the humble expat who has invested in the TRNC and is a guest of the country should keep their mouths shut and foxtrot oscar to a place where the grass is greener!! Anyone who thinks the illegal and blatant abuse of the car horn in built up areas is not an issue that needs to address! If you really think that pointing out just a few of the major obstacles stoping the TRNC from becoming a major force in the Mediterranean tourism sector is negative then what chance does the tourism industry have.

The comments for improving the TRNC are from people who care for it's future which blatantly you dont!!

Pugwash

with regards to the dolmus could you explain how a hotel to beach resort service would have a negative impact on the tourism sector? The comments are about improving the infrastruture and most importantly in educating the key benefactors of the importance tourism has on their economy and how they can help to improve their lives and the holiday makers expectations.

Aslan, my sentiments exactly. There are those who think just because some of us make constructive criticism we are the enemy of the TRNC and want to see its demise. It is those that bury their heads in the sand are the complacent ones.

As Northern Cyprus doesnt have manufacturing to create jobs, then surely increased tourism has to be seen as a boost,

Maybe Capt. Pugwash could form a Tourism Committee with advisers; Roger the cabin boy, Master Bates and Able-Seaman Stains!

Brinsley, mess 26, typical of the childish smut that we see so often from you, for your information,

It was Tom the cabin boy,

It was Master Mate,

There was no Able Seaman or anyone called Stains

And as Pugwash would say,

"Nautical nitwits!"
