The reasons for the UK assistance are complex and many but here are a few; 1. To prevent German (and French) domination of the EU through economic means, and; 2. To prevent the rise of Sinn Fein in the Republic. They are currently standing at 11% in the polls and could be expected to take 20 seats in the Dail in the event of an election, and; 3. The UK LOAN is currently set at £4 bn. This is the same amount paid out to UK bankers in bonuses for 2009, and; 4. UK Banks (RBS, BoS) are up to their necks in Irish property deals the UK Govt wants them off the hook, and; 5. Ireland is the UK's largest trading partner. The UK exports more to Ireland than Brazil, India, and China COMBINED. Ask the workers in the Ford, Honda, and Nissan factories. I say these things with no pride, but let's live in the real world. The UK does not and cannot exist in isolation. I'm off to Banbridge and Newry (in the UK) where they will happily take my Euros. Keep it real. DD

Under current plans it is reported that we could be liable for up to £7 billion in any Irish bailout. Not being part of the Euro single currency, why should the burden fall on our shoulders? We rejected the Euro. WE made the right choice and shouldn’t now see our money put at risk bailing the project out. It needs to be the responsibility of the European Central Bank. A bailout will by no means solve Ireland’s or the euro’s problems in the long term, it will just buy another temporary reprieve for the fiscal problems in the eurozone. The problem is fundamentally more deeper then that

Why not bail them out..when the UK is going to profit from it!....... not sure of exact figs..but in essence...we are borrowing the money to lend them..at a lower rate than the rate we are lending the money to Ireland Sounds perfect economic and financial sense to me

Thank you for that - so many people dont know the facts and when we were flying and Lidl and Aldi came into Ireland - nobody except the foreigners were interested in shopping there because they were completely reared on UK products! - I rest my case!

Hi again, The total LOAN from the UK to Ireland has now been confirmed at £3.25bn. £250,000,000 of that is pledged for cross border road building projects between the Republic and Northern Ireland. Once again I reiterate that British banks got into the Irish property casino and are now in trouble (possibly to the tune of €8 BILLION). The British Govt is protecting their own system as much as the Irish one. Do not get complacent if you happen to be Dutch (RABO Bank are up to their necks in Irish mortgages) or Danish (Danske Bank has an Irish subsidiary NIB). So being outside the Euro is meaningless. Maggie Thatcher and her mate Ronald Reagan started the whole GLOBALISATION project. So they are the one's who began the whole process of this brave new world. My missus has just ordered a new Nissan car that will be manufactured in the UK using a British workforce. If the logic of Goonerboy's argument is followed, she should have ordered a Fiat or Citroen. !!!!!! DD

I would ratyher the money went to Ireland than bloody Afganistan, Iraq just have a look at where are money goes at the moment. Britians overseas aid programmee is set to rise to 9 billion in 2013. We even give to Malta and Singapore and Saudi Arabia, its a joke. Singapore has the 4 largest income per capitia in the world, and the r.... hold us to ransome over oil. Put our own house in order first and look after our own. At least the the Irish can understand and speak our language. If this sounds racist make up your own mind.
