I am a student in Famagusta, I'm living here now for about one and a half year, and during this time I keep seeing this everyday in every corner...

Why do people bind their dogs outside (in the street) in a very bad condition where there is dirt is wet and cold and the poor animal must stay there all alone every day... if I was the dog I preferred to be a stray...

How can anybody understand why some humans feel it acceptable to mistreat any living thing in this way... It's got me beat, that's for sure. To be impervious to this kind of suffering is alien to most people.

Arvin, unfortunately Famagusta is particularly bad for dog neglect and abuse but as you are a young student you could help to educate others. There is a strong Turkish Cypriot animal rights group functioning there that support BARK, the rescue shelter in Bogaz. Contact them and maybe together you can help a few more animals. Good luck and remember every little you can do may affect another to do the same.

Good sound advice but you know that the biggest complainers will complain and do nothing to help the situation.

You may be right there but we just have to rise above it. There will always be people who do and people who think about doing. That's life. We just get on and do!

Do these people who bind their poor dogs up in all weather think the dog has no feelings.

We have always had dogs they are loyal and faithful and very much part of the family.

They are very sensitive creatures. How would people that do this like to be bound up

for hours on end.

Dogs are not generally considered as pets here, in fact there is no Turkish word for pet, most of them are kept for working? hunting? sheepdogs? or the latest scary trend as in UK, men (rarely women) are buying designer dogs for status symbols. There is a worrying influx of Rottweilers, Dobermans and Pit Bull terriers being imported. Most of these men who buy these dogs have not got a clue how to train them or look after them and soon TRNC will be in the same situation as UK with this problem.

Why do they tie them up? Because they don't know any better and have no education relating to animal care unfortunately.

Well that is not true about me ;; AlsancakJack

I have established a little group to support homeless animals in my country I'm not one of those people who just passes by a living creature in need... same here most of the time instead of books I carry dog food with me and feed the dogs in the streets when I see a hungry one...

So there is 2 rescue shelters ? one is KAR and the other one in Bogaz? didn't know about that.

Groucho;

"The Turkish for pet is 'evde beslenen hayvan' "

'evcil' pronounced'evgil' might be easier.Though,in dictinary it might come up as 'tamed' rather then 'pet'.

Lets us put a bit of perspective on this.

We have adopted a street dog. It was carrying a litter of 9 pups (early stage) and we had the dog shall we say 'sorted' by the vet . The dog is a cross Staff and is black. We also have 8 cats that have all been 'sorted' and live in our house (they were here well before we took on the dog) The dog is maybe two years old and has been used to being chained up outside. The dog will never be allowed into our house for obvious reasons but she is quite happy to stay outside, however we have to chain her up at certain times of the day because we have schoolchildren that walk past our villa in the morning and afternoon that are scared of our dog (ask any CT about black dogs). Do not always assume a chained up dog is an unhappy dog.

AJ now that story interests me as I have a full breed staffi black as the ace of spades, I wonder where the hell he has been. I know he had his end away in Edremit, I wonder if he is a daddy . We have searched up in Edremit trying to find a staffi look alike as we were told there was one there, to no avail. I agree with you also that to be chained up they are not all unhappy. If you had asked me that in the UK i would have cried thinking about it. Now when we come into work Mojo knows he has to go on the chain to guard the house, he loves his role as my protector. As soon as I have my shower he opens the door outside and waits by his very long chain. Whats the stort about CTs and black dogs as I do not know this xxxx

Arvin msg 8, continue that way. I am just the same. i feed hungry animals and cant walk past them without helping! Not many people do that. I'm glad you think that way and try to help innocent animals!

I hope you will win the lottery Lilli! I would come for help, I promise! I can understand you not wanting to take in anymore as it makes life hard for you but at least you will still be feeding and watering ones you find along the road! Happy to know! xxx

Hi Lilli

When we chain our dog she goes into guard mode and barks at anything/anyone within a 500 meter radius but when she is off the chain she is a lot more placid. But we had a problem with school children walking by our villa and when they realised the dog was not on a chain they started running and of course our dog thought it was a game and started running after them which caused them a lot of distress. So now she is chained up at certain times of the day. With regards to black dogs and CTs/T's they (so I have been told) regard black dogs as being 'dogs of the devil'.

Our dog has had two years of socialising taken away from her by her previous owners so we are embarking on a re-education program with our mutley and it appears to be working. But she still has not gotten used to the dog kennel yet. (thanks for that by the way).

Enjoy your New Year

AJ

AJ no worries you are more than welcome. I just wonder if she is anything to do with my king. As i never ever saw another staffi here and black as well. They do love to play and guido is a nightmare if he runs he chases. We do let him in when we get home as he demands it, then he turns into the docile creature he is, All three bark at the constant stram of tipping lories and walkers going by, they bark but cant go anywhere. I never ever thought when I brought him with me from UK he would be on a chain but he loves it, he feels lord of the manor xxxx/ You both have a great new year. xxxxxxx

We have 2 Staffys', Black bitch & White male, locals on first meeting them move away and stay wide. Now even the local shepard strokes them and is quite happy if he is out with the sheep when we have the dogs out the sheep are also happy to let the dogs sniff them.

A lot of sweeping generalisation on this thread - when we all know that many English and other nationalities "have to leave TRNC for personal reasons and can't take their animals with them" we are never told these reasons of course, only that they can afford to get themselves and their belongings back to wherever, but leave their animals behind to go feral or be abused or damaged by vehicles or those frightened of them...........
