The Minister of Tourism, Environment and Culture Kemal Dürüst has announced plans to declare 2011 as the year of environment in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The Minister made the statement while on a courtesy visit to the TRNC Foundation for Environmental Protection CEKOVA. Dürüst said the aim of his visit was to inform the foundation on several of the government’s environmental projects envisaged for next year.

He said ‘if the projects are implemented, it will pave the way for a permanent and stable environmental policy to be developed and therefore it is very important’. The President of CEKOVA Kenan Atakol, for his part noted that environmental problems in the Republic were growing every passing day, adding that education was essential for environmental conservation and preservation and to unplanned urbanization. ‘As CEKOVA we are ready to give any kind of support that may be necessary’ said Atakol.

Perhaps they could begin by researching and risk assessing the rubbish tipping in the TRNC. What effects does this have on the environment? This is not just about education but also about the laws that support safeguarding the environment. Come on Government, stop talking about it and take action. The island is an eyesore. More and more tips are developing and if you truly wanted to solve this problem you would be much more proactive. Tourism requires clean beaches, safe walking areas and no blots on the landscape, not just words.

You are dealing with a government that knows tipping is widespread, yet takes no action. How can we possibly go from being totally inactive to suddenly becoming the 2011 year of the environment?

Of course 2011 is going to be 'Year of the Environment', Bradus! Why? Because it's recently been [officially!] announced that 700,000 Turks will be arriving next year. They must be the workers, heavily disguised as 'tourists', to do the big 'TRNC Clean-up'! We must all stop being so sceptical!

Wouldn't it be a shame if these lorries suffered repeated punctures from carelessly disgarded nails, broken glass, stinger devices etc. I mean, what's to stop this happening on a daily basis given the rubbish that's being spilled up there?
