There appears to be much publicity, but little action, regarding the promotion of the TRNC as a tourist resort. In it's existing state, I could only see the TRNC appealing to the single 18-30 group. The very market most would want to avoid. Family friendly resorts are many and varied throughout the Med, USA and Turkey. The TRNC would certainly have lots of competition. What would the TRNC need to do to attract more tourists? What prevents it from being a family friendly resort?

Direct flights is what is needed. After that everything else will fall in its place. Having dragged 4 children to TRNC for years on 12 hour journeys, believe me it was not easy.

Bradus - "I could only see the TRNC appealing to the single 18-30 group" Sorry, I completely disagree. Theres nothing here for your average 18-30 year old. I would say that in it's existing state the TRNC is only suitable for the over 50's.

Its really easy to cater for the 18-30 age group and requires very little financial input. You simply need bars, sport facilities and organised trips and activities. Financial considerations are minimised because you are not taking into consideration the cost of the whole family. Single people are usually prepared to pay more for their holiday and often come in groups. However families need good pavements that cater for little feet and prams. This is definitely missing in the TRNC walking through the streets can be a nightmare and is made worse by the parking of cars on pavements. Such a simple everyday activity becomes stressful and not what you want when on holiday. Think long promenades where children can be safe yet free. Agree with the direct flights YFred but would also add that the cost also makes it prohibitive too. Some flight costs are as much as the cost of a holiday package. Car hire is a must and also adds to the cost.

Finally the beaches are just not family friendly (maybe not even people friendly) because of the rubbish. This has been an ongoing problem for many years. There are some excellent beach clubs but who wants to pay daily? See other posts regarding Acapulco and Escape beach prices. Lots to do, if the Government is serious about attracting tourist.

You are right Bradus - the government has a lot to do before tourism takes off in a big way.

Exactly apc2010. People will always make comparisons and there will always be word of mouth. Promoting the "existing TRNC" just ain't going to work. Indeed could do more harm than good in the long term.

Bradus...As you say ,bringing tourists here whilst the place is a dump would hardly be good for the TRNC's image...Perhaps when Turkey takes over and the Island is less of an eyesore as regards rubbish everywhere .....But then only perhaps..
