Local, Esentepe-based, bobby visited us today with a list of Brit pers who had oustanding summons and asked if we knew any of the named people. We did not, but the point is, if they revisit, they will be arrested at the point of entry and taken to prison to await their court case!!! The Police are trying to avoind this by tracing those who have broken the speed limit laws - proactive and helpful policing!!!

"...they will be arrested at the point of entry and taken to prison to await their court case!!! " This should do wonders for the tourist trade.

Seemingly, TRNC authorities are determined to defy EU regulations regarding the periodic calibration pertaining to legal operation of their speed cameras. Has it ever been established that the necessary service requirements for maintenance are regularly and systematically carried out? After the Geoff & Mary saga, for which it transpires that they were, in fact, falsely arrested and imprisoned on arrival at Ercan; and due to the 'Not Guilty' verdict, plus the fact that they [allegedly] have not been awarded their rightful, or any, costs, this latest mandate of: "...they will be arrested at the point of entry and taken to prison to await their court case!!! " does not bode well for any intending foreign visitor. Perhaps the Foreign & Commonwealth Office should include this warning on their website and EU travel agents be required, by law, to verbally advise all intending travellers and issue a printed warning to ticket buyers, so that people are aware! Hosgeldeniz Kibris!!!

I suspect that any tourist returning to TRNC that gets arrested and imprisoned for a speeding ticket, will never return again.

Well so be it TRNC Vaughan.. you break the law you pay the price (sometimes). Seriously though, the policeman who came to us has tried 4 times to track the list of people he has to avoid them being arrested on point of entry if they come again. He said the paperwork he has is the 4th lot to be issued and, as he is unable to handover the paperwork to said people, the court will issue an arrest warrant. He is trying his best to avoid this but with little or no info on the form, other than town name, he is fighting a losing battle. I do not want to post names here so if anyone has any ideas on how to "find" missing people, let me know.

msg 8 - .... you break the law you pay the price (sometimes). That's assuming you 'did' break the law and the camera was in calibration etc. Regarding finding offenders, I would have thought the solution was very simple, with the approval of this site management, arrange for the Police to set up a named account, maybe TRNC Police, and they could post on here every week the required people. All they would have to do then is remember to do it. Isn't that what sites like this and the internet is for? Most Ex-pats are on here or know someone who is, and this would solve problems for all.

CarrieRBag/Msg 8: 'Well so be it TRNC Vaughan.. you break the law you pay the price (sometimes).' Hardly a laughing matter, or, when we have all just witnesed the appalling treatment of Geoff & Mary Day, this a warning [allegedly] from the police not to be taken lightly. One has to query, exactly who has persuaded, or directed, the courts to issue such arrest warrants on unsuspecting tourists? Hardly the the best PR exercise that TRNC should, or could, pursue; but, then again, they seem to have a penchant for 'digging a deeper and deeper hole'! May I ask you why you are so concerned with helping the police in their quest? I am sure other readers of this topic would also be fascinated to know your motives!

Message 10. I read message 8 as being concerned with those who will be arrested. Do not try to move the thread by supposing a motive!

I think the point I was making is that to jail someone for an aledged minor motoring offence, in this day and age, is a nonsense, particularly for a country trying to adopt EU standards.

"...you break the law you pay the price (sometimes)..." Well, you do need to know that you have broken the law before you can pay the price - flashless speed cameras give drivers no hint that they may have incurred a fine, or are you suggesting that departing tourists check with the police before leaving the country? In any case, I do know of cases of drivers being advised of speeding fines 2 years after the aledged speeding offence took place.

Jefferson/Msg 11: CB/Msg 8 is requesting information on methods of finding missing persons, presumably for the purpose of passing on such information, if forthcoming, to the police - or, that is my interpretation of her request. I merely queried her motive for posing such a question - hardly an attempt at 'trying to move the thread'! The capacity for ambiguity of the written word is immense!

Ref msg 10. You are, it would appear, to be of a highly suspicious nature. The intention was to warn Cyprus 44 expat users of the Court's intention regarding this issue in order the mesage could be pased on to non-Cyprus based visitors. However, why should we not help the police? Is that not the responsibility of all civic-minded people? Rhetorical question that does not need a response!!

Why did I bother! It seems that asking for advice on how to prevent something happening to ex-pats (be they resident or holiday patrons, is cause for some to begin their rants! Tell you what, forgot the post, I will try and find them without your help!

In this case, isn't the responsibility of some British person to notify the British High Commission, so that they can, at an official level, verify this latest [alleged] TRNC edict/warning, and pass on, again officially, their relevant findings to the appropriate UK authorities, in order that the latter can take the steps necessary to ensure that UK citizens are [officially] made aware of the risks? Why would any individal(s) take it on themself/selves to find 'offenders', who, it appears, have no idea that the police are even looking for them? As for 'suspicious'; how many of those criticising me have had dealings with the TRNC legal system, or a lying advocate? Until you have, kindly do not cast foundless aspersions! If you haven't,

Ref msg 18. What a tirade! Help, don't hinder. Your personal experiences with TRNC authorities is of no relevance to the thread of trying to help the 'offenders' avoid a problem if they return here or the police who have been tasked to find them. Please do not bother to respond if you have nothing +ve to add.

tomsteel/Msg 19: I'm sure your resolve, ingenuity and tenacity will solve this dilemma. At least, what I posted re. one of you contacting the British High Commission is constructive, whereas your police assistance/co-operation appears to have been totally ineffectual, no matter how public-spirited your intentions might be!

When you arrive at Border/Ercan and have an outstanding speeding fine, They will give you a docket stating you attend the police station within 48 hours, Got one on Thursday when over south, offence was August 09. No jail sentence 129TL fine. Linda

it would be a good idea to have a web site with the names of the speeders on it from official sources. then at ;east if there was a "fixed fee fine " you could pay at entry into TRNC ,thus cutting down time and further costs to everybody.I mean arresting people over standard speeding fine is pointless, and damaging. i would trust if i had a ticket awaiting then the hire company could inform me ? kav

I always use RoC-registered cars so never have this problem, although sticking to the legal speed limit may also have something to do with it. That said, police on the other side have a much better approach by driving along with lights on to keep a hi-viz presence along with the cameras and radar.

If the police force done its job right speeders should be called on at least 1 or 2 days after the crime is committed if the hire car paper work is put up to date and looked at every day checked and double checked that way people dont leave the island untill the hire is checked for faults

It is amazing how people jump to conclusions and then they accept it as the truth. Then they come up with bright ideas. Unbelievable. Actually not unbelievable for me any longer, I am used to it. How can people be so gullible? Nobody will go to prison for an unpaid ticket. True, they will stop you at entry and tell you to go to the police station to pick up the ticket or the summons. As you all know by now I have a good collection of unpaid tickets and I am not anybody special, the same laws apply to me as well. My only priviledge is that I am able to defend myself in court without the services of an advocate. The reason is simple: I believe that I can do a better job than any advocate here. They are hopeless in technical matters and they will not know what calibration means for a start. ismet

elko, If there are advocates working in TRNC who don't know what calibration means, then what is the definition of "advocate" here. Can anyone call themselves that?

Denny and Richard, "Calibration" is really an engineering term and you should not expect the advocates to know the ins and outs of it unless they speciaze in that subject. Going back to 1965, I was working for CEGB (Central Electricity Generating Board) and an old lady sued the Board for too much noise coming out of a substation, the usual humming noise. I was given the task to take sound measurements in that environment and then off I went to see the solicitor. I was not sure how I would be able to explain decibells, octaves, filters etc. and so on but the moment I met him I knew that he had a good grab of things. Apparently that was his expertise. I will be shocked if I meet one like that here in Cyprus. ismet
