| Turkish basketball team Pinar Karsiyaka which is leading Group C in the Eurochallange Cup was attacked in the Greek Cypriot Side. Spokesperson of the team said "3000 Greek Cypriots attacked the team after the game. Our fitness instructor's arm was broken during the attack. Our team was going to spend the night in Lefkosa and return to Turkey through Athens. But after the incident the team decided to go to Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus under the escort of UN Peacekeeping Force. The team will return to Turkey today." | Well done to my cousins living south of the border. They have shown their true colours yet again. I notice that usual appologists are upto their usual tricks. According to one apoel eye witness (sonradan gormush) big knob described the incedent as just a few botles thrown. Also claimed that if they fly out of Ercan they will be penilised. Where is the only "decent GC" here to condem this violence? |

As an adjunct to this and from the same source: UGLY ATTACK TO TURKISH TEAM IN GREEK CYPRIOT SIDE Greek Cypriot supporters attacked members of a Turkish basketball team Pinar Karsiyaka in its group match with Apoel. The Greek Cypriot supporters hurled gas bombs on the basketball players and later came the changing room and beat the players. Some of the basketball players were injured. It was stated that UN Forces will ensure passage of the team to Turkish side. SABAH

Re : msg 1 - "3000 Greek Cypriots attacked the team after the game" We all agree that the attack was abhorrent, but the spokesperson for the team seems to be a little confused - Maybe he meant there were 3000 spectators there, some of whom attacked the Turkish team after the game -It is physically impossible for 3000 people to enter a changing room. Nevertheless, the GC authorities should be ashamed of themselves for allowing it to happen ...

Three young people, aged 15, were arrested by Cypriot Police following the incidents last night's basketball game between APOEL and Turkish Pinar Karsigiaka. The match won 82-80 APOEL, however, did not qualify to the next stage of European club competition "GiouroTsalentz" (EuroChallenge). A police spokesman Michael Katsounotos said the intervention of members of the Police Department in Nicosia was "immediate and decisive catalyst in order to protect the mission of the Turkish team, which was achieved thanks to the efforts of our members."

cont.. He stressed that there was no injury to members of the Turkish team, led by police escort at their residence on the premises of the GSP stadium and now depart from Cyprus. Mr. Katsounotos said that there was any provocation on the part of the Turkish team and added that supporters of APOEL acted "completely unprovoked and unnecessary". The race, he said, done "decently and in athlitoprepi context, while making ground for" merciless war accepted members of the Police. " The match was attended by about 2 000 APOEL fans, while during the match there was no incident.

Adversity breeds opportunity, this type of action with polarise the 2 state solution....bring it on. At the momemt Turkey is the high flying economy, whilst Greece/South Cyprus is busted. This attack is a predictable but still unacceptable public action i.e. blame others for your woes. It just reinforces my reasons for buying in NC, however I have never been a SC fan either as it is a flat coatal plain, sorry. Before the doom merchants start to comment about the value of property & deeds in NC, all I would say is that I bought as a holiday home/ultimately the place to potentially retire in 10/15 years, rather than a quick buck investment, which may or may not prove to be prudent, but so what, I love NC. Sorry if slighlty off thread, but a positive post must be worth a 1000 negative ones....

I asked the same thing to a TC friend - Apparently Turks are allowed in to TRNC (from the south) but can't fly out of Ercan - apparently it will seem to the GC (passport) authorities that they are still in Cyprus ... apparently

I cannot beleive that the Greek Government can still do there normal, turn a blind eye to these events, why oh why can we not get this Publicised world wide, so evey nation can been encouraged to boycott any Greek Cypriot sporting events in the future, or until such time as they offer a guarantee of safety to all participants Educated and intelligent nations, need to wake up and smell the coffee, shame on the Greek Cypriots, you are all responsible for your fellow country mens actions.

No comments from any of the forum's pro bubble members then! Funny how they can't find anything to say in such circumstances. If the perps were only 15 it isnt their fault as the teachings they receive in school set them on such a path.

'Breezy'.. I read about this late last night and I'm guessing you'd have me down as 'pro bubble'.. Bubble as in squeak.. Greek.. which just shows you are as ignorant as the fascist APOEL 'supporters' who think they are 'Greek'. I WAS waiting until I had read from some non TR based news agencies... If I believed all I read about Istanbul, I - being a Leeds Utd supporter - would never have gone there...

Tracer Having been acosted by a young GC girl at Larnaca whilst waiting for a flight I have had their view of Turks and Tcs direct from the horses mouth. She was barely out of school and doing a market resaerch job. I had time to waste and answered her questions. When she didnt recognise my hotel i had used for two nights on a trip to sign papers, she asked where it was. When I answered Kyrenia I may as well have said I was staying with the devil. She told me some of the things she had been taught at school which seemed just a tad incredible. Regretably I cannot really understand your first sentence which I must put down to English not being your first language.

Why can't people see this for what it was - a riot by fascist thugs which was handled well by the police who did their job to protect the Turkish visitors. This could have been in any country so why do some people try and politicise it? We all know England is notorious all over the world for producing football hooligans, as said above. Sorry to have to bring this up, but compare and contrast with civilians previously being beaten to death and shot - on camera - by riot police and army in TRNC. Let's not have shameless hypocrisy, especially at this time of year of goodwill.

THE government yesterday scrambled to launch a damage limitation exercise following the violence against a Turkish basketball team by a faction of APOEL hooligans, which has handed Turkey the PR coup of the year. Government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou said that on the instructions of President Demetris Christofias letters were being sent to the United Nations and the European Union in a bid to put things into perspective and to give the whole story. The incident, which took place on Tuesday night after the end of a FIBA Eurochallenge game between APOEL and Pinar Karsiyaka, was also condemned by all political parties yesterday. Police on Tuesday night were forced to use tear-gas after the game to disperse a crowd of around 500 APOEL supporters after they started throwing things at the Turkish team and followed them when police ushered the Turkish players to safety. http://www.cyprus-mail.com/hooligans/scramble-limit-political-damage/20101224

Msg 33 Denny yes there are a few football idiots everywhere but it is not the usual practice to actually and deliberately attack a team. You try and diminish this incident, it was despite what you said, it was Political.
