I seem to have stupidly ordered a Blu ray instead of a conventional DVD, will it play on my player or do I have to return it?

NO. BluRay discs carry high definition and therefore store data in a high density format. A standard definition DVD player will not recognise a BluRay disc and will simply report an error if one is loaded. On the other hand, a BluRay player will not only play BluRay discs but will also handle standard DVDs. Most will also recognise and play CD format discs. Most Bluray players will also down convert the HD signal from a BluRay disc so that it can be viewed on a standard definition television. In this case, of course, the image quality will be the same as any other standard definition signal. To benefit from the high definition signal, an HD television is also required.

Its Christmas so Just treat yourself to a PS3, then you can play games as well as Blueray DVD's all in HD.... if you have an HD TV that is.

As well as PS3 I would look at Xbox 360 because you can watch anything you've stored on your PC on your HD-TV via a wireless network router without even a wire from PC to TV... it's fantastic as a Windows Media Extension for Picture Audio and Video files. Using Tunebite on your PC you can convert BBC iPlayer downloads and any other formats (like Matroska 'MKV ' files) to play on your TV too.

Static - I did say 'as well as...' meaning that there are options. The Xbox is particularly easy to use in this respect being a Microsoft product. Vuze will recognise that an Xbox is on the network and can be made to automatically re-encode downloads for play back on the TV.

Oh dear I have no idea what a PS3 is or an Xbox 360 and have no wish to play games on anything! I did however buy my husband a Kindle for Christmas which we have just got up & running what a fantastic idea they are, no more dog eared paperbacks cluttering up the house! My Blu-ray disc is Madonna Sticky & Sweet Tour but thanks to this board I did not have to open it to find out it would not work on my player I can just send it back for a refund.
