| In New Zealand, the Kiwi [NZ national emblem] is becoming endangered, due to increasing predation by dogs and cats; therefore every effort is made at government level to protect and nurture them. The Kiwi is one of several flightless birds indigenous only to NZ. Prior to the arrival of humans, first the Maoris, who brought dogs, there were no four-footed animals in NZ and so nothing to threaten birds, except a native hawk. This link describes the conservation efforts of the Nelson DOC + photos of a cuddly Kiwi chick - so cute! http://www.stuff.co.nz/nelson-mail/news/4496496/New-kiwi-chick-found-at-Nelson-Lakes-haven |
