Went today, everything was in order, just one problem.......a new ruling (which only applies, I think, to couples who are married, with one working and the other seeking a residency). Before the residency stamp is given , a government official will visit your house !!!! To check what ?????? I'm not sure what.......the translation I received was to see if its nice or not !!!! Lol. My husband has said it could be to see how much insurance I should pay, the same as him or not. What is going on ?????? Anyone else had any experience ????? They did add I have nothing to worry about.

It's for healt and safety reasons, and the main reason is because of mainlanders coming over and living in 'sheds',unfinnished houses...etc in very poor conditions. They visit their houses all the time to make sure of their living conditions before giving residencies to them. However, when the rule was set up,it was for foreigners rather then mainland Turkish, which is why you've been told that you have nothing to worry. Rules are made for us to obey.If you had no work permit (not in need to work),you'd have just been given the residency there and then.

If Girne Police Station say resdency is not needed for the over 60's, then why do they keep taking the applications. Who has heard of anyone being told at the police station they didn't need it. Don't listen to rumours.

The only reason that I can see for getting residency is the driving licence situation. You can't get a TRNC licence without residency/work permit and motor insurance is not valid over 90 days without a TRNC licence (if you are driving a TRNC reg. vehicle that is).

I understood that you only didn't need residency when you are over 60 is if you are married to a Turkish Cypriot otherwise you do.

If residency for over 60s is not required then why was the law changed recently to allow over 60s to obtain 2 years residency? When I renewed mine last June they gave me two years but did not say anything about exemptions. Its very confusing.

Well, whatever the law says, I don't think that anybody is going to readily admit that you don't need residency over 60. After all, they are in the business of collecting as much money as they can! It would be good to see - in English - the actual immigration law on the subject. Where might this information be obtainable?
