How does Nicosia fair against cities such as Newcastle, Birmingham, Manchester, Cardiff, Nottingham etc? In terms of: general facilities, availability of major clothing/textile brands and everyday electrical devices. Restaurants, infrastructure, cinemas, shops. Is Nicosia cosmopolitan?

@martinD41, What is your point?, what are your thoughts? How does Nicosia compare? Robin Hood was a fictional, folklore character.

This is a mixture of Turkey and Greek, you dont see anyone walking nude, so you can get clothes, people cook at home so they have electrical devices, nobody seem to lack of foods here either so people eat either at home or on restaurants. There is even shopping malls as well as cinemas. This is cyprus, here is a life and you can live here so do it and take all the good sides of it. If you miss the cities you talk about and their infrastructure etc better stay there. I find questions like this waste of time, what about get into Nicosia and explore yourself!!!!!!!!! If you want cosmopolitan go to Istanbul or london as you will properly know that

@me-style, Thank you for your reply, but there is no need for you to be rude. I get a feeling that you somehow thought I was trying to be derogatory, but I was definitely not. I was just curious to know. If anyone else could also give me their comparative opinions I would be thankful. Best regards.

Nicolas Apaart from their particular history most cities in the UK are generic as far as facilities and shopping goes in my experience. North or south cyprus cannot compete in terms of the numbers of shops available in those sorts of cities but then why would they want to! Harold

Nicolas, I am not rude or ignorant, but why you don't go and look yourself, this is called to explore yourself. This is much better to get an first hand opinion. Again this is not the UK so don't compare anything with that, this is in KKTC Turkish lifestyle as this is Turkish, on the other side Greek will be dominant.

msg9 I think Nicosia is unique. It is certainly the only Militarily divided City in the EU.The North side is Internationally " Unrecognised" and the South much the same as any small EU city as regards shops etc....There is an obvious difference in infrastructure immediately apparent on crossing from the EU to the TRNC.

Nicosia is very cosmopolitan (Dereboyu area for example where there are great shops, boutiques, restaurants and bars) and also very Cypriot/Turkish (the old town area). You can buy everything you need there but you will not find the big name shops that you get in UK cities (M&S, Debenhams, etc). You can however walk 5 minutes across the border at Ledra Street if this is what you want.

If you don't get an uneasy feeling reading member Nicolas' latest question(s) - then I strongly suggest you read his posts in his profile: http://www.cyprus44.com/forums/show-member.asp?member=Nicolas I'm not insinuating or suggesting anything. Of course not. Just make up your own mind. P.S. How come Nicolas' style of writing reminds me of member Alex Johnson?

Nicolas, Nicosia/Lefkosia/Lefkosa is a city like no other. It is full of history and atmosphere. Regional comparisons would be I guess Beirut (without the seafront) or even Jerusalem, which is the world's other divided city. You could spend days happily wandering through the back streets, markets and and workshops which straddle both sides of the Green Line. Nowadays the flats and town houses in the centre are occupied by Anatolian immigrants on the north side and guest workers in the south. Bars, restaurants and tavernas on both sides are excellent and not too expensive. A walk along the Venetian bastions will give you good views of both sides and the CBD. The big international stores are in the south, in and around Ledra Street. The north's Selimye mosque is surrounded by flea markets, traditional shops and some decent kebap joints. Nicosia can get hot in summer days but is relatively cool at night. Come and experience the place for yourself.

How does Nicosia fair against cities such as Newcastle, Birmingham, Manchester, Cardiff, Nottingham etc? With appologies to all people from the cities mentioned - how many muggings occur in Nicosia against the others? Can you leave your wallet in a shop in Nicosia and have it returned to you next time you go in? Do you feel safe walking around in cities other than Nicosia in the dead of night on your own? Nicosia - in a country that does not exist has got to be on a par with all the others mentioned, considering that it is not there to start with, gets no fair trade from any country apart from Turkey and is aledgedly full of murderers, thieves, aids, plague, filth, rapists and of course the Turkish Army on every corner just waiting to hang you from a coat hook if you look at them wrong!!! I would rather be in the North side of Nicosia than the South and in either than any city in the UK - but not everyone likes it.

waddo you might be right....However although I agree with you and I too love Nicosia, walking around the harbour in Girne is a nightmare constantly pestered.... Lisbon is beautiful, and safe! Auckland - the city of Sails - is lovely, perfectly safe... Chester here in the UK is OK, but 10 miles down the road in Wrexham - you do not want to be there on a Friday or Saturday.... Lots of Cities are great for lots of different reasons...................just enjoy...............
