My staffi has not been well for some time, today we took him to pertev. He has real difficulty walking and to try to get up on the sofa with me is a nightmare for him. He has also developed a very large lump on one of his back legs. The lump is a ball of fat according to perteve which needs to be removed but he has developed arthritis. Quite badly. Pertev has prescribed tablets which he will have to take for the rest of his life. What I want to know is it possible to give him human vitamin tablets. I know you can get one for joints etc. I cant remember the name. God love him he is a sorry state tonight after being tranquilized. I also need a good diet for him.

Guess the vets know best, but maybe it would be a good idea to take him to Fertez for another olpinion. Not to say that Pertev doesn't know, but just like human doctors, they sometimes differ and a combination of thoughts can help. On the other hand, you don't want to upset Pertev and maybe you should ask him about the human vitamin tablets. I expect they have some for doggies as their digestive systems are different to ours.

Hi Lilli I don't know about his lump? but if it needs to be removed then get your vet to remove it and then get them to analyse it! arthritis human tablets are usually Glucosamine, there is a dogs equivalent called Flexi joint, my very old Schnauzer used to have these, he died at 17 from old age! his diet in his latter years was chicken and rice! I don't know if that is the same as your vet would prescribe! Good luck, I know from my own experience that arthritis comes and goes! X

Hi Lilli, Not a nice thought but old age creeps up on us all. The lump seems to be a growth which could mean problems without knowing what it is. Its OK to give him human vitamins, just a low dose first just in case they are too strong for him. What I give my dogs is ABIDEC Childrens Multi Vitamin drops. Don't know if you can get them over there, but they might have similar. Also codliver oil tabs are good for his joints. The best pain relief is "ASPRIN" which works as an "anti inflammitory" on the arthritis. Hope this helps? And hope he gets better soon, also kept him warm. Regards Colliedog.

Hi Lilli I can recommend Glucosamine & Chondroitin sounds a bit of a mouthfull but you can buy it in ASDA in the UK in their Health Supplements section, it was recommended by a friend who is a pharmacists. It is recommended for Healthy joints and Bones you should be able to track it down somewhere in the TRNC or get someone to bring it over, unfortunately I personally will not be over until Easter, you can also give him cod liver oil tablets which should help.

lilli..be careful how much asperin you give him. Most humans are restricted to 1/2 of 350milligram tablet .If I was you I would try him on1/4 tablet first and see how he goes.I have to take asprin every day but only 1/2 a tablet. I took glucosomine for years till I had my knew knee fitted this year and they seemed to ease it quite well. You can get different strengths of it from 350 up to 1200 milligrams.Once again you will have to try him on the lowest dose and work upwards.Cod liver oil is marvelous for joint s as well.Take them every day and have done so for yearsgreat for my fingers.I think you will have gathered I am a bit of an old crock and you would be right but we keep on going.Hope the dog picks up and I would definitely have that lump looked at again!!! Have a nice New Year and a great 2011

Hi Lilli, I have a 10 year old chocolate lab who has quite a few lumps called lipomas, They are soft to the touch, usually movable. The vet tells me these are generally painless and harmless depending on their size and position. Even though we know she is prone to these fatty lumps- when another appears we always have it checked - just to be sure. She also suffers from arthritis which the vet recommended a product called Searaquin- which contains Glucosamine HCl, Chondroitin sulfate and Turmeric extract. It can be used on its own or in tanderm with prescription arthritis treatment where necessary. My lab has one tablet each day. The vet is amazed how well she is doing since she has been taking Searquin. Don't know how easy it is to get in the TRNC though. Good luck for the op- and many happy years with your old friend.

You should try one of the copper and magnetic collars they work wonders. Hippo has one and it works on his knee. Mrs H

Hi Lilli, sorry to hear your staffi is poorly. I see on here several people have mentioned Flexi Joints.I have been using them for my Shaz for 7 yrs. I also give her a cod liver oil capsule daily. She was born with hip diplacier. My vet operated when she was a pup.Obviously couldn't do a hip relacement but cut the muscles in her groins to give her a bit more flexibility. She enjoys walks and playing with other dogs .Occasionally when she overdoes it she lets me know if she's uncomfortable and I give her an aspirin the 75 mg type that folks take to keep their blood from clotting. This seems to soothe her. I buy the Flexi Joints online and get friends to bring them out to me from the uk http://www.vetvits.co.uk

| The tablets are probably Rimadyl, an anti inflammatory. Our vet in the UK preferred Metacam for long term use and it certainly gave our old collie a good few extra years. Some don't like it as long term as it can cause liver/kidney problems, but as I said it worked nothing short of a miracle for us. You can't get it here (maybe in the south), and it's prescription only, but maybe if you know a UK vet, they'd send it out to you. You shouldn't give aspirin long term, can cause stomach bleeding, as in humans. We also thought a magnetic collar helped, and you can give dogs 'human' glucosamine, just adjust the dose weight wise. | Hi Lilli, the pharmacist in me is coming out again! The recommended dose of aspirin in dogs is 5mg per pound or 10mg/kg in any 12 hour period. Always make sure it is given with food and do not give the enteric coated (E.C.) make as most of the dose of aspirin will pass straight through the dogs intestines. When our dog had problems (she weighs 15kg to give you an idea of dose/body weight) she was given Meloxicam 7.5mg - HALF a tablet DAILY and Famotidine at night to prevent stomach problems. That was prescribed by Sibel and worked wonders. Hope he comes through all this well. Take care |

Hi Liz, My Maine Coon cat was diagnosed with arthritis, and worn away elbow joint, a couple of months ago.He can no longer jump up anywhere, and I have little foot stalls everywhere to make steps for him. Anyway, you can get Metacam here, it just comes under a different name. Melox, and is sold in most chemists. The ingredients are the same, just a different name. Pertev then changed from Metacam to a steroid called Prednol, which seems to be helping a lot. He is also having glucosamine and chrondotin for animals which I bought on line and had sent here. I think Pertev is excellent, so am just going with what he suggests. For some reason this has now affected his kidneys, so is losing weight despite eating. He was very stressed when this first happend, but seems to be adapting to his limitations. I do hope your staffi does the same. We love our animals so much, and would do anything to make life a little easier for them when they are in pain.
